Light reaction>> Reaction occurs only in the presence of light
Dark reaction>> while the dark reaction happens both when there

is light and when it its dark.

Photosynthesis occurs at chloroplast. Chloroplast contain
membranous structures which are pilled up into stacks called
grana.

à mrana contain the light trapping pigment clorophyll.
à mrana are embedded in a stroma.
à The dark reaction take place in stroma.

Chlorophyll captures light energy which excites electrons of chlorophyll
to higher energy levels. Electrons can also leave the chlorophyll
molecules. Light energy is also used to split the water molecules into
hydrogen ion (H+) and hydroxyl ions (OH-). This reaction known as
photolysis of water. The hydrogen ions combine with the electrons
released by chlorophyll to form hydrogen atoms.

During dark reaction, the hydrogen atoms are used to

fix carbon dioxide in a series of reaction catalysed by
photosynthesis enzymes.

Overall reaction results in the reduction of carbon

dioxide into glucose:

The glucose monomers undergo condensation to
form starch which is temporarily stored as starch
granules in the chloroplasts.
