Because You WatchedAn Affair to Remember

Netflix Guides a Millennial Through the Golden Age of Cinema
By Hannah Koeller
Out of the suggestions Netflix gave me to watch after People Will Talk, I chose An Affair to
Remember!

Synopsis: Although each is already engaged to another, Nickie Ferrante (Cary Grant) and Terry
McKay (Deborah Kerr) meet on an ocean liner and fall in love. (source: Netflix)
An Affair to Remember was released in 1957 and is the second color film I have seen from the Golden
Age. It was nominated for four Academy Awards. Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr made three movies
together in their careers and their on-screen chemistry is undeniable. They improvise lines and finish
each others sentences and talk without words. That made this love story even more sweet and
believable.

See what I mean? Also, An Affair to Remember was voted the fifth greatest romance of all time by
the American Film Institute and I cant say I disagree. The two main characters meet by chance on a
ship, become very close friends and fall in love with each other. They even stop in Italy to visit his
awesome grandmother. Its SO cute. Before the ship returns to New York, the pair decides to meet
at the top of the Empire State Building in six months if its meant to be. From there, its up to fate.
Its movies and stories like this that make us, in a cynical and constantly changing world, believe
something that happened in 1957 can definitely still happen today. This movie doesnt need any
complicated storylines, sex, drugs and all the things we see so often in todays movies. Just two
people who love each other and the realness of life.
Top 3 Takeaways
1. Gossip always travels unbelievably fast.
2. Love is patient, love is kind
3. Cary Grant looks better in color.

Im so happy my second Cary Grant movie experience was a success! I love the sweetness and
simplicity of the love stories in these Golden Age movies. They dont need all that extra stuff to hold
my attention. Good humor, genuine storytelling, and a little Cary Grant is enough for me. I dont
know what else to say. Watch this movie!
Here are my movie choices for next time:
