The aspects of the case that met my expectations for a criminal trial was the fact that Celia

was
interrogated and statements were taken down before any actions were taken in her arrest to the
Murder of Mr. Newsom. Even after Celia admitted her guilt to Powell they had gone to find the
physical evidence in order to show proof of the murder. The manner in which Powell conducted
the investigation to me did not follow the order of due process. He was very accusatory in his
interview and made verbal and physical threats to her wellbeing. Jameson, Celias attorney
played and related the best he can to humanize her and have the jury see her as a person rather
than a slave by presenting questions which made Newsom look like an abuser and although the
Judge sustained the objections by the prosecutor it does not take away from the fact that the
jurors heard the testimony by the witnesses which would still have an impact in humanizing
Celia as a slave being abused to the point of which she had no choice, but to strike her master
under duress. The court was very one-sided and hostile towards Celia in a passive aggressive
way by striking out key evidence of abuse, but I feel that Jameson made an impact by repeat
reprisals of the questions ask to help convey the abuse Celia had faced. In short I feel the defense
did what it could even though the court tried to suppress key statements by witnesses. As stated
in the text it was a time of turmoil among abolitionist and pro-slavery South, the outcome of her
case would help determine and make precedent the amount of civil rights a slave would when
being abused by slave holders which would help dictate future cases that arise. Do you feel the
undertones of the case was prejudice against Celia, even though judge Hall tried to conducted the
setup of the trail as fair as possible? If so what evidence shows she was tried under hostile
conditions?
