Theplayerwinningthelaghastheoptiontodeterminewhohastoexecutethefirstbreakshot.(See1.2LaggingtoDetermineOrderofPlay.)Thestandardformat
isalternatebreak(SeeRegulation15,SubsequentBreakShots.)
3.2EightBallRack
Thefifteenobjectballsarerackedastightlyaspossibleinatriangle,withtheapexballonthefootspotandtheeightballasthefirstballthatisdirectlybelowthe
apexball.Onefromeachgroupofsevenwillbeonthetwolowercornersofthetriangle.Theotherballsareplacedinthetrianglewithoutpurposefulorintentional
pattern.

3.3BreakShot
Thefollowingrulesapplytothebreakshot:
(a)Thecueballbeginsinhandbehindtheheadstring.
(b)Noballiscalled,andthecueballisnotrequiredtohitanyparticularobjectballfirst.
(c)Ifthebreakerpocketsaballanddoesnotfoul,hecontinuesatthetable,andthetableremainsopen.(See3.4OpenTable/ChoosingGroups.)
(d)Ifnoobjectballispocketed,atleastfourobjectballsmustbedriventooneormorerails,ortheshotresultsinanillegalbreak,andtheincomingplayerhasthe
optionof
(1)acceptingthetableinposition,or
(2)rerackingandbreaking,or
(3)rerackingandallowingtheoffendingplayertobreakagain.
(e)Pocketingtheeightballonalegalbreakshotisnotafoul.Iftheeightballispocketed,thebreakerhastheoptionof
(1)respottingtheeightballandacceptingtheballsinposition,or
(2)rebreaking.
(f)Ifthebreakerpocketstheeightballandscratches(seedefinition8.6Scratch),theopponenthastheoptionof
(1)respottingtheeightballandshootingwithcueballinhandbehindtheheadstringor
(2)rebreaking.
(g)Ifanyobjectballisdrivenoffthetableonabreakshot,itisafoulsuchballsremainoutofplay(excepttheeightballwhichisrespotted)andtheincoming
playerhastheoptionof
(1)acceptingthetableinposition,or
(2)takingcueballinhandbehindtheheadstring.
(h)Ifthebreakerfoulsinanymannernotlistedabove,thefollowingplayerhastheoptionof
(1)acceptingtheballsinposition,or
(2)takingcueballinhandbehindtheheadstring.

3.4OpenTable/ChoosingGroups
Beforegroupsaredetermined,thetableissaidtobeopen,andbeforeeachshot,theshootermustcallhisintendedball.Iftheshooterlegallypocketshiscalled
ball,thecorrespondinggroupbecomeshis,andhisopponentisassignedtheothergroup.Ifhefailstolegallypockethiscalledball,thetableremainsopenand
playpassestotheotherplayer.Whenthetableisopen,anyobjectballmaybestruckfirstexcepttheeightball.

3.5ContinuingPlay
Theshooterremainsatthetableaslongashecontinuestolegallypocketcalledballs,orhewinstherackbypocketingtheeightball.
