ustogether,andtakesusaway.
TheMountainsareveryoldandanongoinglifeforcethatstrengthenstheancestrallinkofourpeople.
Wehavealiving,spiritualconnectionwiththemountains.Weretainfamilystoriesandmemoriesof
themountains,whichmakesthemspirituallyandculturallysignificanttous.Ourtraditionalknowledge
andculturalpracticesstillexistandneedtobemaintained.
WerecognisethediversityofAboriginalclansandPeopleoftheMountainsWiradjuri,Wolgalu,
Ngunnawal,MonaroNgarigo.WerecognisethatWiradjuri,WolgaluandNgunnawalareknownby
theirtotem,andacknowledgethematrilineal(mothers)bloodlineoftheMonaroNgarigopeople.We
alsoacknowledgethatmanyotherclanshaveassociationswiththemountains.Themountains
recognisethelanguagenamesgivenbyourpeopleandnamingofplacesstrengthensourlivingculture.
Ourpeopletravelledfrommanydirectionsoverlongdistancestogatherpeacefullyonthemountains
fortrade,ceremony,marriages,socialeventsandtosettledifferences.
Thecycleoflifeandmanyseasonsinfluencethemovementofourpeoplethroughthemountainstothe
seaandthedesert.Thestars,clouds,sunandthemoonguidedpeopletoandfromplacesof
importance.Thesetravelroutescontinuetobeusedandspokenabouttoday.
Livingbynaturalcycles,thelandprovidesourpeoplewithlife,ceremony,familylore/law,and
resources,suchastools,plantmedicine,plantfood,waters,fish,animalsandinsectse.g.theBogong
moth,whilethemeltingofthesnowgiveslifetothemanycreeksandriversthatflowoutofthe
mountains.Thereareplacesofspiritualandphysicalsignificancetoourpeople,andwearecommitted
toworkinginpartnershipwithotherstoprotect,maintainandmanagetheseplaces.
Forcedseparationfromourlandhadaprofoundimpactonourfamilylife.Europeangovernance
disruptedanddestroyedourtraditionalways.Weweremovedawayfromourcountry,andmany
peoplewereherdedontomissions.Aboriginalfamilylivesweretornapartwiththeremovalof
children,andpeoplewerethreatenedwithdeathinsomeinstancesiftheytriedtopracticetheir
traditionalways,especiallylore,languageandculture.
Letusnotforgetthepastwhilewelookforwardtothefuture.Pastandpresentpracticesmakeus
strongandwearecommittedtomakingthisabettercountryforall.
ItisourvisionforthefuturetocooperativelyandcollaborativelyworkwiththeNationalParksand
WildlifeServicetomanagetheparkandmaintainitsspiritual,naturalandculturalvalues.Thiswill
buildastrongculturalandeconomicbaseforfuturegenerationsofourpeople.Thedevelopmentand
provisionofemployment,trainingandeconomicopportunitieswilldeliverbenefitstoourpeopleand
communities.Ourculturewillbestrengthenedbyaccesstoourtraditionallandsandthedevelopment
andparticipationofourpeopleinculturalcampsandculturalmaintenanceprograms.Bypassingon
knowledgetofuturegenerationsofAboriginalchildren,ourculturewillstayaliveandstrong.
