BLOOD PRESSURE
HOW TO MEASURE, RECORD, AND ANALYZE

1. To begin taking the patients blood pressure, use a blood pressure

cuf. The length of the cuff's bladder should be at least equal to about
80% of the circumference of the upper arm.

2. Wrap the cuff around the upper arm with the cuff's lower edge one
inch above the antecubital fossa.

3. Gently press the stethoscope over the brachial artery below the
cuff's edge.

4. Rapidly inflate the cuff to 180mmHg. Release air from the cuff at a
moderate rate which is about 3mm/sec.

5. Use the stethoscope to listen as you observe the

sphygmomanometer. The first knocking sound is the patients
systolic pressure. When the knocking sound disappears, that is the
diastolic pressure.

6. Record the pressure in both arms and take note of the differences

MICROBIOLOGY STUDY GUIDE: VIRUSES

Viruses
*Viruses are not made up of cells. They are not alive so they are
not found in a kingdom of life.
*They get inside a host cell, and then direct the cell to produce
new virus particles. The new ones are released and can infect
other cells which can cause diseases such as Hepatitis A or the
common cold.
*Because they are not alive, antibiotics cannot kill them. Taking
antibiotics wont cure the disease caught.

Review Questions
1. Are viruses made up of cells?

2. What do they do once they get inside a host cell?

3. Can antibiotics kill them? Why or why not?
