TUTORIAL 3

QUESTION 1
Air enters an adiabatic diffuser at 50 kPa, 85 oC with a velocity of 250 m/s and operates in
steady state. The exit pressure is atmospheric at 101 kPa. The diameter at the inlet is 8
cm. The exit temperature is 110oC. Air behaves like an ideal gas under these conditions.
Neglect potential energy changes and assumed specific heats are constant. Determine the
exit velocity and the diameter at the exit.

QUESTION 2
Air enters an adiabatic turbine at 627oC and 900 kPa. The air exits at 227oC and 200 kPa
with a velocity of 25 m/s. The power delivered by the turbine is 1000 kW. Potential
energy and kinetic energy changes are negligible, system operates in steady state, air
behaves like an ideal gas under these conditions, and assumed specific heats are constant.
Determine the mass flow rate and the diameter of the duct at exit. (Molecular weight of
air, M = 28.97 kg/kmol)

QUESTION 3
Superheated steam at 1.6 MPa, 600oC enters a well-insulated turbine. The exit pressure is
50 kPa. The turbine produces 10 MW of power. If the exit pipe is 1.6 m in diameter and
carries 11 kg/s of flow, find the velocity at the exit. Neglect kinetic energy.
