Question one text 1-3

a) In order to create a vacuum system the blower will need to be located at the systems end. When at the end, the blower pulls air
through the system and the system runs under vacuum. The filter also needs to be bigger.
b) From research the air velocity required to pneumatically convey wheat is within the range of 5500 to 7000 fpm (25 to 36 m/s). The
pressure drop through the pipeline can be estimated using the air velocity and flow rate as well as looking at length and diameter or
cross sectional area. This is also considered along with the changes in elevation along the piping.

Concepts for ski mask design

- A ski mask made of material with poor thermal conductivity will help to retain heat (option A)
- A ski mask that has mini solar aggregators to make use of sunlight to heat up the ski mask (Option B)
- A regenerative heat exchanger warmed by exhaled air (Option C)
- A regenerative heat exchanger ski mask which uses solar aggregators to aid in pre-warming air and the ski mask is made of
good thermal insulating material (Option D)

Metrics for design matrix

-

Temperature inside the ski mask (1), cost (2), comfort (3), complexity (4)

From the design matrix, the alternative selected is option D which is A regenerative heat exchanger ski mask which uses solar aggregators
to aid in pre-warming air and the ski mask is made of good thermal insulating material and combines elements of the other options.
