have pictures of some of the words to hopefully clarify some terms.

Art History: The study of art throughout history.
Mosaic: A picture or pattern produced by arranging together small
colored pieces of hard material such as stone, tile, or glass.
Tesserae: A small block of stone, tile, glass, or other material used in the
construction of a mosaic.

Frieze: A broad horizontal band of sculpted or painted decoration, especially on
a wall near the ceiling.
Metope: A square space between triglyphs in Doric architecture. It shows a
single scene from a story.
Hierarchy of Scale: artistic convention relating greater size to greater
importance.
Register: one part of a frieze (a scene from a longer story)

A metope is a
rectangular slab
that is separated
by non-sculpted
breaks (triglyphs).
A pediment is the
triangle section above
the columns in a Greek
styled building.

The Parthenon frieze runs


along the top of the wall on
the inside of the temple - it
tells the story of Athenians in
a parade on their way to the
acropolis.

Pieces taken by Elgin include: pieces from the pediments, metopes, and frieze.
