City of Rock Hill announces Grand Opening of Outdoor Discover Center


ROCK HILL, S.C. August 15, 2014 The City of Rock Hill is pleased to announce the grand
opening of the Outdoor Discovery Center located within the Rock Hill Outdoor Center. The
Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism (PRT) will host the Outdoor Discovery
Center Grand Opening on Saturday, Sept. 6 from 11 a.m. 3 p.m.

There will be a special ribbon cutting ceremony at 12:30 p.m. with speeches by Rock Hill
mayor Doug Echols and Hope Matthews, environmental educator for PRT. Following the
ribbon cutting ceremony, the Outdoor Discovery Center will be open to the public.

John Taylor, Director of PRT said, This is a wonderful addition to the Rock Hill community
and is a step in the right direction for environmental education. The Outdoor Education
Center will be a place for families, students and the community to learn about the Catawba
River and its rich history.

A variety of activities will be available for guests at the Grand Opening including kayaking,
guided tours of the Piedmont Medical Center Trail, and childrens games. The event is free
and open to the public.

During the month of September, the Outdoor Discovery Center will feature artifacts found
along the Catawba River and host members of the Catawba Indian Nation as guest
speakers. There will also be a documentary about the history of the Catawba River.

The Outdoor Discovery Center will feature different exhibits each month along with a
permanent Childrens Corner and Catawba River wildlife exhibit.
