Directions: Choose three of the following terms:
The Truman Doctrine, Marshall Plan, Executive Order, The Berlin Blockade, Containment, Bay
of Pigs, Cuban Missile Crisis, Korean War, and Vietnam War (one from each chapter section)
List 3 main causes and effects it had on the United States efforts of containment from
communism.
Section 1: Efforts for Containment (Pg. 485-490)

Term: The Berlin Blockade (1948-1949)

Cause
In the 1948 decided to cut off West Berlin from the decomocratic powers that
controlled the regions for polticial advantage.
It created additional tension during the start of the Cold War between the
United States and their democratic allies versus the Soviet Union.
The United States intervened that dropped off supplies and goods to Western
Berlin in efforts to save the region from furthur Soviet agression.

Effect
The United States continued to send aid and resources to West Berlin defying
Soviet orders.
For the rest of the year, West Berlin continued to receive aid and continued to
run economic development regardless of Soviet Blockade.
Soviet Union gave in, officially ending the blockade in 1949; but tension
between the U.S. and Soviet continue to grow.

Section 2: The Eisenhower Years (Pg. 492-499)

Term: The Korean War (1950-1953)

Cause
Soviet Union and United States divide Korea North and South
causing tension between communism vs. demoncracy.
North Korean Communist Leader Kim Il Sun pushes for an
invasion into the South Korea to unify Korea under communism.
By 1950, North Korea invades South Korea defying orders from
Soviet Union.

Effect
Establishes a three year war which involves the United States and
the newly established United Nations.
United States and China are involved causing the Korean War to
become a global conflict.
By the end of the Korean War, both sides reach a stalemate that
remains close to the 38th parallel.

Section 3: John F. Kennedy Foreign Policies (Pg. 500-506)

Term: The Bay of Pigs

Cause
Former United States controlled region of Cuba had been taken
over by communist government under Fidel Castro.
United States effort for containment continues to push
objectives to recapture Cuba from the communist regime.
CIA creates an operation by sending a small army of Cuban
Guerlla fighers to Cuba to liberate the region form
communism.

Effect
CIA efforts to liberate Cuba fails and their trained army is
captured by Videl and is forces.
Cuba and the United States negotiate terms and returns
prisoners of war back to the United States.
Growing tensions of a communist regime threatens United
States security over the mainland that leads into the Cuban
Missle Crisis that will soon to follow.
