Profile of Roberto Gmez Bolaos

Roberto Gmez Bolaos was a Mexican writer and actor, known around
the world for his characters El Chavo del 8 and El Chapuln Colorado,
among others. He was involved in Mexican television for over forty years
and many children have grown up watching his shows.
He was born into a middle class family in 1929 in Mexico City. His father,
Francisco Gmez was a painter and a cartoonist and his mother, Elsa
Bolaos was a bilingual secretary. He was an amateur boxer. He studied
engineering at the National Autonomous University of Mexico but he
never worked in the field.
Roberto was discovered as an actor while he was waiting in line to apply
for a job as a writer. He got nickname "Chespirito" because he had a
great talent to write and he was small. Chespirito's first show was Los
Supergenios de la Mesa Cuadrada. His best known roles were "El Chavo
del Ocho" and "El Chapuln Colorado". Both series premiered in 1973.
Chespirito received countless awards. In 2003, he was awarded the keys
to the city of Cicero, Illinois. In Mexico, there are many statues of him
and his characters.
On 28th November 2014, Chespirito died from heart failure at the age of
85, in Cancn, Mexico. Chespirito is widely regarded as one of the most
renowned Spanish language comedians of the 20th century. He was
buried at the Panten Francs, in Mexico City and about 40000 fans
attended his funeral.
