11-1 Graphing Linear Equations

BY: ME

Linear equation
‡ A LINEAR EQUATION is an equation whose solutions fall on a line on the coordinate plane. (straight line)

Graphing linear equations

‡ To graph a linear equation, choose 5 values to plug in for x and solve. (choose easy values, almost always use -2, -1, 0, 1, 2)

Graph the following equation and tell if it is a linear equation. y = 2x 3

X -2 -1 0 1 2 2x 3 2(-2) - 3 2(-1) - 3 2(0) - 3 2(1) - 3 2(2) - 3 Y -7 -5 -3 -1 1 (x, y) ( -2, -7) ( -1, -5) ( 0, -3) ( 1, -1) ( 2, 1)

Graph the following, and tell whether it is a linear equation. y = x²

X -2 -1 0 1 2 x² -2² -1² 0² 1² 2² Y 4 1 0 1 4 (x, y) ( -2, 4) ( -1, 1) ( 0, 0) ( 1, 1) ( 2, 2)

Graph the following, and tell whether it is a linear equation. y=

X -6 -3 0 3 6 2x ÷ 3 2(-6) ÷ 3 2(-3) ÷ 3 2(0) ÷ 3 2(3) ÷ 3 2(6) ÷ 3 Y -4 -2 0 2 4 (x, y) ( -6, -4) ( -3, -2) ( 0, 0) ( 3, 2) ( 6, 4)

Graph the following, and tell whether it is a linear equation. y=-3

X -2 -1 0 1 2 -3 -3 -3 -3 -3 -3 Y -3 -3 -3 -3 -3 (x, y) ( -2, -3) ( -1, -3) ( 0, -3) ( 1, -3) ( 2, -3)

To solve on calculator. Step 1: Hit the y= button in top left corner. Step 2: Type in equation in y=mx +b form Step 3: Hit the graph button Step 4: Hit the trace button Step 5: Hit the table button (2nd graph) and all of your x and y values will appear.
