Word Work (Spelling) Practice:

Cut, Sort and Write


Take out your cards and read them all
before you begin. Ask a question if
you dont know a word. Sort the words
into columns based on the word
pattern heading. Read your words
aloud to check if you sorted correctly.
Write your words down on a piece of
paper.
Speed Sort
Shuffle your cards. Set your timer to
zero. Start your timer and begin
sorting your cards into columns based
on the pattern heading. When you are
done sorting your cards, press stop.
Record your time on a piece of paper.
Sort the cards again to see if you can
beat your time!

Blind Sort
Label the top of a paper or whiteboard
with your word sort headings. Have a
partner read you a word from your list
(no peeking)! After your partner
reads the word, write down which
heading you think the word belongs
under. Ask your partner if you spelled
the word correctly. Continue until you
have practiced all of your words.
Thank your partner and switch jobs.

Dictionary Look Up
Pick 5 or more of your spelling words.
Use a dictionary or a dictionary app on
a device to look up and define your
words on a piece of paper. Dont
forget to include the part of speech
(noun, verb, adjective, adverb etc.).

Pyramid Write
Practice writing your words in pyramid
style (one letter at a time, creating a
pyramid).

Color Code
Color code the headings. Write your
words with the pattern written
