Concept Mapping:
Objective: TLW will demonstrate the understanding of barnyard animal noises through the in
class dramatic activity.
Preparation: Barn yard scenery will need to be made and set up in an area with room for the
dramatic activity. All materials will need to readily available at the start of the lesson with the
children.
Procedure:
Teacher: We have been learning about animals and the sounds they make. Today we are going
to focus on the sounds they make.
STORY: Barnyard Banter by Denise Fleming
Teacher: Now we are going to the farm to help the farmer find his missing goose and a few
other animals that have wondered off.
Farmer (teacher-in-role): (Depressed, Sad) Silly ole me, I must have left the gate open. All of
my farm animals have gone missing. I wonder how I am going to find them. Ponders I
know! I listen for their sounds. The best way to remember is with a song.
INSERT PIGGY BACK SONG: The animals on the farm
The donkeys on the farm goes hee-hee, haw.
Hee-hee, haw, hee-hee, haw.

The donkeys on the farm goes hee-hee, haw, all day long.
The cows on the farm go moo, moo, moo.
Moo, moo, moo, moo, moo, moo.
The cows on the farm go moo, moo, moo all day long.
The cats on the farm go meow, meow, meow,
Meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow,
The cats on the farm go meow, meow, meow, all day long.
The pings on the farm go oink, oink, oink.
Oink, oink, oink, oink, oink, oink,
The pigs on the farm go oink, oink, oink, all day long.
The geese on the farm go honk, honk, honk.
Honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk.
The geese on the farm go honk, honk, honk, all day long.
Farmer: Now its time to search my farm for the missing animals. I will be able to tell which
animals they are by the sounds they make. Can you help me match the animal with their sound?
Teacher: explains to class she is out of role and is once again the teacher. Teacher will explain
the next part which is the tableaux.
Tableaux: Farmer walks to first animal and taps them on the shoulder. Student will say their
animals noise and farmer will ask audience to say the name of the animal. After that, the student
gives their animal to the farmer, student becomes the new farmer and the old farmer is now their
animal. The animal will freeze in a position you would find that animal while continuing to make
the animals noise. Pattern repeats through the donkey, cow, pig, and cat.
Farmer: Im still missing my goose, where could it be? The animals follow farmer around the
room looking for the goose. Teacher to audience: Do you hear what I hear? The response is the
piggy back song.
SING PIGGY BACK SONG: Do you what I hear?
Said the wind to the little farmer
Do you hear what I hear?
Ringing through the night little farmer
Do you hear what I hear?
A sound, a sound
All throughout the farm
With a honk you can know my name
With a honk you can know my name
They finally come to it and tap it on the shoulder. Come with me my farm animals, back to the
barn we go!
