MATERNAL MORTALITY
Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR)

Refers to the number of women who die as a result


of complications of pregnancy or childbearing in a
given year per 100,000 live births in that year.

Maternal Mortality Rate


Maternal Mortality Rate is defined as the
number of maternal deaths to women in the
ages 15-49 per lakh of women in that age
group.
Life time Risk
Life time risk is defined as the probability that,
one women of reproductive age (15-49) will die
due to child birth or puerperium assuming
that chance of death is uniformly distributed
across the entire reproductive span.

MMR estimates 2010-12: Highlights

Results are given at all India and for Major


states.
Decline in MMR estimates in 2010-12 over
2007-09:
For India: 178 from 212 (a fall of about 16 %)
In Empowered Action Group (EAG) states &
Assam: 257 from 308 (16 %)
Among Southern States: 105 from 127 (17
%)
In Other States: 127 from 149 (15 %)

Levels of MMR by Regions, 2010-12

EAG and Assam almost 24 women per lakh of


women in age group 15-49 are dying due to
Maternal causes whereas in Southern States it

reduces to only 6.
