Week 8

BOOOOOO!!!!!! Happy Halloween!!!!!!

A big Thank You goes out to Dior and Aubrey. They were wonderful Super Heros
this week!

Halloween is a very exciting time for students! Our class thoroughly enjoyed Old
Costume Day! We couldnt believe the level of cuteness in this room! The
children, at this point, are very comfortable with our classroom rules and routines
and are learning appropriate behaviours for the school environment. We have had
general discussions regarding what we sometimes do or say at home, may nor may
not be appropriate for school. The boys and girls are really trying very hard! Well
done!

Language: In language this week we explored the letter Rr. We also completed
another writers workshop. The children were asked to pretend that they were a
witch. What would they put inside their witches brew??? Some of the responses
were truly disgusting!! Perfect for Halloween! We have also been using our morning
message to explore concepts of print. Such as capital letters at the beginning of
sentences, periods at the end and spaces between words. Please reinforce these
concepts at home. Have your child point them out to you in a story. The name
printing is improving daily! Please continue to practice this at home as well.

Art/Music: This week we drew various Halloween pictures and put together a very
cute Frankenstein craft. When completing a craft in the classroom, we are able to
see how the students follow step-by-step directions and/or multiple directions. It
allows for fine motor practice (cutting, gluing, precision in placement, etc). We
also listened to A LOT of Halloween music. This included a very old 1929 clip called
the Skeleton Dance. The kids loved the old humour and the silly music. I had to
explain multiple times, that NO I was not alive at this timethey didnt buy that!
Science: This week we carved a classroom pumpkin and made an adorable jack-olantern. We placed it in an empty observation tank to see how long it takes to
decomposeyuck! The students will also observe what happens to this vegetable as
it breaks down over time. Wicked Williams our FDK 2 witch created a witches brew
with the class that actually boiled and bubbled!!!! The children absolutely loved her
dramatic rendition of a witch and couldnt believe that this potion made her turn
green!!
Religion: This week in religion we continued a conversation about kindness and
appropriate behaviours. We discussed how to manage our emotions and recognize
how we are feeling and deal with that particular emotion.
Math: We have continued our focus on patterning and had fun creating a jack-olantern face with various shapes. We loved the different looks that the children
created!
