Mac Williams Middle Grief and Loss
Group

WHAT

A small group that will act as an emotional outlet for

students who have experienced a traumatic loss.
The goal of the group is to help participating
students gain strength and support from interacting
with other kids dealing with similar losses
The group will also strive to help the child
understand their feelings and develop coping skills
and find closure.

WHO

This group is made up of three 7th grade students.

2 twin siblings, 1 other student

These students were chosen because they recently

lost a close relative (Ex: parent, sibling, etc.)
The participants are all students at Mac Williams
Middle School

WHEN

Start Date: October 8, 2015

End Date: November 12,
2015
The group met twice a week
(Tues.& Thurs.)
Each meeting lasted approx.
30-45 minutes.

WHERE

The group met in a secluded

office or conference room at
MWMS
The purpose was to provide
privacy to students as they
spoke openly with the group

WHY

As the counselors began a mentoring program, it

was agreed that these particular students needed
more one on one help
These children have also showed signs of grief that
parents/guardians have found concerning
Parents/guardians reported student lacked coping
skills.

INITIAL CONCERNS

Will it work? Will it even be beneficial?

What if the students do not get along?
What if they decide to drop out of the group?
The teachers may not want to let them out of class!
