Anecdotes: Aleck Jackson gave his life in the First World War. He fought in the battle of Vimy
Ridge. Along with 11,000 other Canadians, Alecks body was never found. They made a famous
Vimy Memorial to represent all those fallen soldiers who were missing or presumed dead. This
memorial was given as a gift to Canada, by France. It took 11 years to build this monument.
Many Canadian trees and shrubs were planted there to represent Canadian forests and
parklands. On April 3, 2005, the Government of Canada designated April 9th of each year as a
national day of remembrance of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.
