CHAPTER 4
PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION
4.1 Objective
1. Determining the optimum process parameters in Hard Turning operation in order to
achieve the surface Finish equivalent to the Grinding Operation.
2. Determining the contribution of process Parameters (Feed Rate, Speed, Depth of Cut
and Nose Radius) on the Surface Roughness value.

4.2 Problem Definition

1. Traditionally, finished surfaces have been ground from near net shape hardened steel
parts. However, it is a slow process with low material removal rates, replacement
processes are desired.
2. In hard turning operation there is no necessity of coolant, high material removal rate, low
space required .Hence in hard turning operation, the machining time and machining cost
can be reduced.

4.3 Problems Occurring in Hard Turning are

1. Hard turning can influence the work piece surface microstructure by generating
undesirable residual stress patterns and over hardened surface zones that are referred
to as white layers.
2. Tools wear in Hard Turning operation.
