BRIDGET JONESS DIARY (2001)

Bridget Jones is, in the words of Chaka Khan, every woman.
Shes smart but baffled by men; shes pretty but always concerned about her weight; shes hilarious but often unintentionally so. She sings terrible karaoke, wears inappropriate costumes
to fancy dress parties and drinks far too much. In short, she is
a modern day hero, and at Girlie Night, well celebrate her, just
as she is. Leave your genuinely tiny knickers at home and let it
all hang out as we cheer on Bridget, tell off Hugh Grant and
swoon over Colin Firth, a man so handsome, he can even pull
off a reindeer sweater. 11/2
ATTACK THE BLOCK (2011)
Were excited to be bringing back the greatest sci-fi triumph of
the last decade to the big screen! Featuring the star of the new
STAR WARS film, John Boyega. Guy Fawkes Night in London
is a time for fireworks, fooling around and an occasional surprise or two. But when vicious extraterrestrials decide to crash
the hellraisers holiday in ATTACK THE BLOCK, a time for
making merry quickly turns scary. 11/12 & 11/14
HOT FUZZ (2007)
Big Cops. Small Town. Moderate Violence. IFC presents a Free
screening of the boys in blue. In HOT FUZZ, Edgar Wright
and company do to action cinema what they did to horror:
they walk the cleverest of lines between homage, parody, and
downright bad ass awesome. 11/24

the SECRET SOCIETY

A FILM CLUB FOR THE FILM FAN

the SECRET SOCIETY of FILM-MASONS | Session XXIX

SAMURAI COP Double Feature
A devastating double feature that was twenty-four years in the
making! In the late 1980s, direct-to-video trash-action was as
common as shoulder pads and skinny ties. But even in this
neon-soaked jungle, SAMURAI COP was a true anomaly. Living legend Joe Bob Briggs said it best: a recently unearthed,
soon-to-be-classic kung-fu action-comedy skin flick with gratuitous gore elements. 11/11
the SECRET SOCIETY of FILM-MASONS | Session XXX
BATTLE ROYALE (2000)
The bona fide cult sensation, BATTLE ROYALE made a big
impression on a certain Mr. Quentin Tarantino and definitely
served as inspiration, whether Suzanne Collins wants to admit
it or not (she wont), for that other, PG-13 movie about teens
brutally offing each other in a Most Dangerous Game of survival, THE HUNGER GAMES. 11/18
the SECRET SOCIETY of FILM-MASONS | Session XXXI
RAISING ARIZONA Quote-Along (1987)
Not a blockbuster at the time of its release, it has since
achieved cult status. In a manner typical of Coen Brothers fare,
the movie is replete with symbolism, visual gags, unconventional characters, flamboyant camera work, biblical references,
pathos, and idiosyncratic dialogue. 12/2

TNOVEMBER AT THE ALAMO

THE DARK KNIGHT (2008)
There are superhero sequels and then theres The Dark Knight.
Arguably the finest sequel that doesnt have the word GODFATHER in the title. Nolan took what could have been an
easy cash grab of a follow up film and made one of the most
thrillingly incredible and complex crime films cinema has ever
seen. Pepper in an awe-inspiring, character-redefining and
Academy Award-winning turn from Heath Ledger and youve
got yourself a film for the ages. 11/5 & 11/7
FANTASIA (1940)
Disneys groundbreaking masterpiece, consists of eight animated segments set to classical music conducted by Leopold
Stokowski, with seven pieces performed by the Philadelphia
Orchestra. Music critic and composer Deems Taylor acts as the
films Master of Ceremonies and introduces the audience to
each act in this imaginative and innovative film. 11/8 & 11/9
THE GODFATHER (1972)
Anchored by a quartet of brilliant performers (Ellen Burstyn,
An undisputed classic and still one of the most loved, acclaimed and popular films of all-time THE GODFATHER
feels just as fresh and groundbreaking today as it did in 1972. It
made Al Pacino a star, it cemented Marlon Brando as the acting
force of generation and shed light on the unique and overflowing talent of Coppola. 12/1

BRECKENRIDGE BREWERY + NEVER SUMMER

Every year Breckenridge Brewery and Never Summer Industries, two Colorado companies that take great pride in earnest
craftsmanship, hail the coming of snowboard season with
Opening Day celebrations across the U.S. This year, the Alamo
is thrilled to participate in Opening Day by offering up two
Free screenings, plus, one lucky guest at these screenings will
win a limited edition Artist Series snowboard!
DUMB AND DUMBER (1994)
Harry and Lloyd are traveling cross country on a quest to return
a briefcase to the woman Lloyd loves. Sure hes only met her
once, but she gave him that kind of old fashioned romantic
feeling where he just knew he would do anything to bone her.
Of course what these idiots dont know is they accidentally
picked up a ransom briefcase and are being pursued by trained
killers. 11/16
THE SHINING (1980)
Stanley Kubricks masterpiece about the Torrance family, holed
up for the winter as the caretakers of the Overlook Hotel,
is intense, stunning, and downright scary! Its full of nowclassic horror film moments, from ALL WORK AND NO
PLAY MAKES JACK A DULL BOY to Heeeres Johnny!,
REDRUM, and those creepy twins, but it never feels clichd or
outplayed; its the kind of horror movie that ages well. The terrifying imagery and sounds only become stronger as the years
go by. 11/17

NOVEMBER AT THE ALAMO

NOVEMBER

NOVEMBER AT THE ALAMO

THE GODFATHER PART II (1974)
A completely different film from its predecessor in terms of
narrative structure and tone THE GODFATHER, PART II
fulfills the clich of being a sequel that delivers and, in some
ways, surpassing the original. Following the drama surrounding
the Corleone family at the end of the first film, PART II takes
two decidedly unexpected detours: One into history, the other
into politics. 12/3
Mondo X Chiller
FRIDAY THE 13TH (1980)
Well be giving away a Mondo FRIDAY THE 13TH knit
sweater to one lucky winner at this screening!
Terror and suspense abound in this 24-hour nightmare of
blood! Camp Crystal Lake has been shuttered for over 20 years
due to several vicious and unsolved murders. The camps new
owner and seven young counselors are readying the property
for re-opening despite warnings of a death curse by local
residents. The curse proves true on FRIDAY THE 13TH as
one by one each of the counselors is stalked by a violent killer.
Watch as Kevin Bacon and a cast of pretty young coeds fall
victim to a barrage of knives and arrows! 11/13

Video Vortex
SANTO AND BLUE DEMON VS THE MONSTERS (1970)
Over the course of three decades, Mexican wrestling sensation
El Santo starred in fifty-bazillion movies. But only one of those
movies finds Santo and his pal, Blue Demon, caught in a bloodthirsty death-battle with Dracula, Frankensteins Monster, The
Wolf Man, The Mummy, The Creature From The Black Lagoon, The Vampire Woman, a little person hunchback named
Waldo, and an unidentified creature who looks like a tree with
cauliflower for a head. And this is it!! SANTO AND BLUE
DEMON VS. THE MONSTERS is non-stop sensory overload. It falls somewhere between a WWF Royal Rumble and a
surf-goth dance party in a graveyard at midnight. Frankensteins
monster drives a Mercedes! The Creature From The Black
Lagoon is also a cyclops! Santo eats dinner, reads a newspaper,
and makes out with people -- all with his mask on! If life gets
better than this, we dont want to know about it. 12/1
Vinegar Syndrome:
DEMONOID: MESSENGER OF DEATH (1981)
Evil monks! Severed demon hands! Satan erupting from a
grave with a sword! Co-produced in Mexico and the United
States, DEMONOID: MESSENGER OF DEATH is the most
off-the-rails killer hand movie to ever crawl out of a haunted
tomb. When Samantha Eggar (THE BROOD!) vists Stuart
Whitman (NIGHT OF THE LEPUS!) at an archeological dig,
they unknowingly unleash . . . Demonoid! DEMONOID is a
disco-infested fun-fest that features plenty of violence against
hands, an appearance by Russ Meyer discovery Haji (FASTER
PUSSYCAT! KILL! KILL!), and inserts directed by 1980s trash
guru Jim Wynorski (CHOPPING MALL!). 11/16

MOVIE PARTIES

INTERACTIVE SCREENINGS AND CINEMATIC EVENTS

SPACEBALLS Movie Party (1987)

Its all about merchandising! Spaceballs-the T-shirt, Spaceballsthe Coloring Book, Spaceballs-the Lunch box, Spaceballs-the
Breakfast Cereal, Spaceballs the Movie Party! Mel Brooks is a
parody genius and never have his tools been put to better use
than with his lampooning of George Lucass space opera (he
did it before it was cool). Seriously, spoof films have gotten to
such a pathetic level that people have forgotten how great they
can be. Well, the Drafthouse never forgets! 11/9 & 11/10
PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES (1987)
John Hughes comedy classic stars Steve Martin as Neal Page,
a high-strung marketing executive, who meets Del Griffith,
played by John Candy, an eternally optimistic, outgoing, overly
talkative, and clumsy shower curtain ring salesman who seems
to live in a world governed by a different set of rules. They
share a three-day odyssey of misadventures trying to get Neal
home to Chicago from New York City in time for Thanksgiving
dinner with his family. 11/30

traumatic experience, Jun lives in the shadows away from the

SAMURAI COP DOUBLE FEATURE

DRAFTHOUSE FILMS
DANGEROUS MEN with Patton Oswalt Live
1989, Iranian filmmaker John S. Rad moved to the U.S. to shoot
his dream project, a rampaging gutter epic of crime, revenge,
cop sex and raw power. Just 26 years later, he completed an
American action film masterpiece that the world is still barely
ready for today: DANGEROUS MEN.
After Mina witnesses her fiancs brutal murder by beach thugs,
she sets out on a venomous spree to eradicate all human trash
from Los Angeles. Armed with a knife, a gun, and an undying
rage, she murders her way through the masculine half of the
citys populace. A renegade cop is hot on her heels, a trail that
also leads him to the subhuman criminal overlord known as
Black Pepper.
Its a pulse-pounding, heart-stopping, brain-devouring onslaught of 80s thunder, 90s lightning, and pure filmmaking
daredevilry from another time and/or dimension. Blades flash,
blood flows, bullets fly and synthesizers blare as the morgue
overflows with the corpses of DANGEROUS MEN.
We need to sit down and discuss this with one of the few men
that can help us wrap around a movie this insane. We will be
joined by our good friend Patton Oswalt for a night of comedy
and insanity. 11/25

RAISING ARIZONA

VICTORY VANGUARD
Victory Vanguard Presents is a monthly film series for teens
who are serious about film. Join us for these $3 screenings
followed by a discussion with Alamo and guest programmers.
All ages welcome. No parent or guardian required for guests
14 and older.
SHADOW OF A DOUBT (1943)
At times Hitchcock referred to SHADOW OF A DOUBT as
his favorite of his own films. If you only know the Hitchcock
of PSYCHO, THE BIRDS, REAR WINDOW, etc. you may be
surprised by the lightness of touch Hitch displays in SHADOW
OF A DOUBT.
Its the story of a girls fascination with her sainted Uncle
Charlie, and the gradual realization that he may not be what he
appears when he pays the family a visit.
The All-American small-town setting is well sketched (credit
that expert on small town America, screenwriter Thornton
Wilder) and the performances by leads Joseph Cotten and
Teresa Wright are transcendent. The two are able to convey
an almost telepathic understanding of one another, and the
conflict of the film plays itself out in their eyes, in tiny turns of
phrase, and in gesture. 11/15 & 11/17
