History and Location


In the 1840s, Greeks arrived to Chicago
as ship captains and started as food
peddlers, then became restaurant
owners
Greeks held events like Taste of Greece
and then Chicago recognized the Greek
population and even built traditional
Greek temples in the area
It is located around UIC (University of
Illinois at Chicago) along Halsted and
Jackson Street

Directions from Loyola to Greektown


Get on Red line towards 95th and get off
North/Clybourn stop
Walk to Halsted and North and get on the
Halsted bus that goes towards 79th
Get off the bus at Jackson Street
Arrive at Greektown
OR
Take Red line towards 95th and transfer to Blue
line on the Jackson stop
Take Blue Line towards Forest Park and get off
UIC- Halsted stop

Fun Facts and Attractions


The Architecture is varied throughout the neighborhood.
High-rise condominiums and office buildings are scattered among traditionally Greek
restaurants
Unlike other ethnic neighborhoods around Chicago, the Greektown inhabitants are not
predominantly Greek.
The area celebrates its Greek identity constantly by having restaurants display bright Greek flags,
signs in Greek as well as in English, and many buildings painted a pure white.
Festivities and lively celebrations abound in Greektown:
Annual Hellenic Heritage Parade
The Taste of Greece is another festival held annually.
Other ethnic festivals include the St. Basil festival and the St. Demetrios festival.
