Mock Self-Designed Proposal
Mock Self-Designed Proposal
GUIDELINES
1. Proposal submission timeline: Proposals should be submitted at least one month prior to the expected start date of the
experience. International experiences require at least two months notice. Contact your honors advisor immediately for
any exceptions.
2. Proposal length: While the quality of the proposal is most important, strong proposals are typically 3-4 pages singlespaced.
3. Proposal format: Please maintain the proposal format (e.g. headers, layout)
4. Time commitment: Experiences should consist of at least 75-90 hours of preparation, execution, and reflection. This is
approximately equivalent to the commitment of honors seminars and pre-approved experiences.
REQUIREMENTS FOR INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL
All self-designed international travel experiences require two months notice and must be at least one week in length. You will
need to provide a detailed itinerary (dates, locations and activities). If participating in independent travel (not with UC faculty,
staff or student group), you must also fill out a Worldwide: Honors Experience application via UC International.
Additionally, the Student Travel Policy restricts UC-sponsored travel to countries under a U.S. Department of State Travel
Warning. Those who wish to visit a country with a travel warning must seek an exemption through UC International. Students
traveling without a faculty or staff leader must individually request an exemption. We cannot allow you to count this travel as
an honors experience nor can we give you a grant without an approved exemption.
1. Abstract
Briefly describe the experience. What makes this experience personally meaningful? What goals do you have for this
experience? What is your timeline for this experience?
*If you are proposing an international experience, provide an itinerary.
**If you are developing this experience from an existing opportunity (class with a study tour, campus organization, co-op, etc.)
that is not already an honors seminar or pre-approved experience, how will you differentiate your experience from what is
already required of other students?

During this experience, a group of fifty students and many faculty members from the Youth Futures International will travel to
Valsad, India in Gujurat to experience real medicine in developing areas. The group has teamed up with a hospital and medical
college in the area to mentor the students about the ins and outs of the hospital setting.
This experience is meaningful since I wish to become a doctor one day and learning how medicine is utilized in countries other
than the United States will give me a better perspective on what it is to be a doctor. I plan to shadow doctors in the future and,
by participating in this trip, I will be shadowing doctors and experiencing live surgeries while helping the hospital staff with
tasks. Along with getting hands-on experience in the hospital, the group of students will also attend lectures. This part of the trip
will be only on weekdays while the weekends will be utilized to complete community service projects and sightseeing.
Some goals I have for this experience is that I will achieve a better understanding of what it is to be a doctor. In the United
States, doctors are basically everywhere. This is greatly contrasted with the availability of doctors in developing countries. This
trip will open my eyes to appreciate and value each life.
Leave from JFK- December 30th, 2015
Leave for JFK- January 17th, 2016

3. Connection to Learning Outcomes
List 3 learning outcomes from any thematic area(s). Provide specific activities you plan to engage in to help you make progress
towards the chosen learning outcomes. Describe how you expect each activity to help your progress. Include an estimated time
commitment for those activities.
Demonstrate a sense of empathy, respect, and appreciation for others to build meaningful cross-cultural collaborations
toward mutual growth and prosperity.
I plan to immerse myself into the culture present in Vaslad, India. I am familiar with the cultural differences
between India and the United States since I have been to India on multiple occasions. However, every place in India has a
different culture and I will build meaningful cross-cultural collaborations toward mutual growth and prosperity my
acknowledging and embracing the culture that I will be in for these 17 days. As we will go sightseeing, I will read about he
different istoric landmarks and the history of the inhabitants of Valsad, India. I plan to engage in this learning before the start of
the trip so that I am fully prepared to embrace the culture and people. Also, by doing this, I will better connect with the people I
am surrounded by while completing community service activities and participating in hospital procedures. The estimated time
commitment for this would approximately be about 6 hours total.
Explain how education, advocacy, mobilization, or public policy can influence social issues and transform
communities.
All countries are different in some aspects. In the United States, everyone is theoretically given the same
education and is a major goal in development. However, in some developing countries, education is more geared towards males
rather than females. I will observe whether these circumstances apply to the communities within Valsad, India, and see how
these social reforms has transformed the communities and the status of females. While completing the community service
projects on the weekend, I will observe the gender inequality, if present, in the communities and link this to the social structure
of the area. Furthermore, I will connect my observations to the public policy in the area. Since the time engagement for the
community service is unknown, about three weekends will be dedicated to this.
Demonstrate the ability to locate, interpret, and critically evaluate primary sources appropriate to field.
During this trip, I will be participating in lectures that focus on the health care within that area. Furthermore,
these lectures may be taught much differently that lectures in the United States. In order to prepare for these lectures and
experiences within the hospital, I need to locate primary sources, such as textbooks, to familiarize myself with the subject being
taught. As the number of lectures that we will attend is unknown, I do not know the time engagement towards this learning
outcome.

List 1-2 academic resources you plan to use to enhance your understanding of the learning outcomes. Explain how each
resource connects to your learning outcome(s) and helps you execute your experience. Please include the title and
author/creator for each resource.
Note: Academic resources are professional works that can be used to assist your understanding of the topic. Some examples are
books, documentaries, videos, or research journals.
Society and Culture in South Gujarat, India by: Pandey Kritika
This book will help me create a background understanding of the culture and society in Southern India where Valsad is.
The book will help me with my learning outcomes for community engagement and global studies.
Smt. NHL Municipal Medical College www.nhlmmc.edu.in/
This link is for the college in which we will attend lectures and hospital rotations. The dean of this college is working in
collaboration with the Youth Futures International so that the students will receve the best real-life medical experience in a
developing country. This link will help me with the learning outcomes because I will research the different types of classes and
class formats that lectures are taught in.

Note: While social media can be an effective platform for sharing, only posting on your personal learning portfolio or social
media account(s) does not reach a targeted audience.
I plan to create flyers to place in the University Honors lounge and around camus documenting my main learning experiences.
The placement of flyers will provide a larger range of people wanting to travel in a medical field. Furhtermore, while ths
program is more geared towards medical students, students who enjoy traveling and/or taking classes for international purposes,
are welcome to this experience. Overall, flyers will be placed around campus and I may distribute flyers to nearby high schools
since this program also offers a travel experience for high school students over the summer.
