VIS Assemblies

The purpose and format of assemblies

Assemblies are an integral part of school life. It is a time to share the learning we are
doing in our classrooms. Assembly formats might include: informal oral presentations,
gallery exhibits, partner sharing, songs, physical routines or reading samples of work.
Other reasons for assemblies include special events or guest speakers.
Assemblies should not constitute much extra work. This time should be an appropriate
and authentic way to share the learning that has already happened in class. The value of
sharing learning this way should not be understood as a refined and rehearsed
performance.
Participation
Given our physical space, assemblies will only involve two or three grades at a time. All
grades are expected to host an assembly. All teachers that do not have a homeroom
class should participate if applicable. This demonstrates our shared commitment to the
students and to one another. Exceptions might include scheduling conflicts. Parents are
welcome to attend. However, teachers need to consider seating/space before inviting
parents.
Location and frequency
Teachers are encouraged to use any of the VIS facilities to host assemblies. However,
when scheduling assemblies teachers need be mindful that spaces are shared and
communication is necessary to ensure a successful and informal sharing of learning. An
Assembly Calendar will be compiled at the beginning of the academic year. PYP and
MYP assemblies generally take place once a month during the homeroom period.
Grades should expect to host one assembly per year and it should also be posted on the
Google calendar.
