On 10 April 1912 a very big ship sailed from Southampton in England. She was British and she was called the
Titanic. She was going to New York. There were about 2,220 people on board. This ship is faster and stronger than
any other ship! the owners said. Nothing bad can happen to the Titanic! Its the safest ship in the world!
But the Titanic didnt get to New York. She was sailing very fast across the Atlantic Ocean and on 14 April she hit
an iceberg. The iceberg made a very big hole in the Titanic. The strongest and safest ship sank very fast. She went
underwater in less than three hours. More than 1,500 people died in the freezing water.
In 1985 a scientist, Dr Robert Ballard, found the place where the Titanic sank in 1912. It was the biggest ocean

The Solar System is made up of the Sun, the planets, their moons, asteroids and comets. The Sun is a star in the centre
of the Solar System. Its gravity holds the planets in place. The eight planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter,
Saturn, Uranus and Neptune all orbit around the Sun. Moons orbit around planets. The Earth has only one moon, but
some planets have more than 60. Mercury and Venus do not have any moons.
The four planets closest to the Sun are Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. Mercury, Venus and Mars are made of similar materials to the Earth. Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun. Mercury is the smallest planet and Venus is the
hottest planet in the Solar System.
The next four planets are called the gas giants. They are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Jupiter is the largest
planet in the Solar System. These planets are colder because they are further from the Sun. Neptune is the coldest
planet. They all have rings and lots of moons.

LISTENING
1. Listen. In your notebooks, write the best title.
Tapescript:
Robbert Goddard was an American who is now called the father of modern rocket building. Goddard alone designed, built and flew his rockets.
He read a lot of science fiction stories. Then he worked hard to build rockets because he wanted to see them take
people into space. When he first said that rockets could travel to the Moon, people thought he was crazy.
In 1926, he flew the worlds first liquid-fuelled rocket. He did a lot of experiments in Massachusetts and Roswell,
New Mexico. Alone he invented everything for modern rocket building 30 years earlier than the German scientists
and engineers!
