Answer these questions before beginning the lab. Be sure to turn them in when you submit your
lab report.
1. What happens when a metal is reduced? Give an example of metal being reduced.
Gains an electron. Iron sitting in sea water or any liquid with a mass quantity of salt for an extended
period of time.

2. What happens when an atom is oxidized? Give an example of metal being oxidized.
The atoms in an element lose electrons and the valence of the element is correspondingly increased.
C + O2 CO2
3. If metal ions in a solution were reduced, what would you expect to see?
Metal forming.

Refer to the activity series link.

4. Which metals will be able to reduce copper ions in solution?
Any metal above copper the activity series like lithium, zinc or iron.

5. Will copper or lead be able to replace zinc ions in solution? Why?

Lead because it has a close reactivity to zinc than copper does

6. Which metal will not be able to be oxidized by any of the other metals listed?
lithium

7. If you had a house with both copper- and zinc-galvanized iron water pipes, which metal would be
oxidized first? Why would this be desirable?
Zinc. It is less harmful to us if we happen to digest it.

8. Trace amounts of copper are required for good health. But high concentrations of copper can be toxic.
Under what conditions might too much copper go into solution?

Excess copper intake produces anemia by interfering with iron transport and/or metabolism.

9. What periodic trends of reactivity occur with the alkali metals?

Reactivity increases the farther down you go

10. What periodic trends of reactivity occur with the halogens?

Decreases as you go down
