Cell Parts / City

Directions: Fill in the table below with the important information that is requested. You
will use this information to design your cell city. Refer to your notes or to the textbook
(starting on page 40) for help.
Organelle

Structure
What do they look
like?

Function
What do they do?

If a cell were a city,

what could you
compare their
function to?

Plant
or
Anim
al

Nucleus :Ex

Small Round
dark structure

Contains
information for
building proteins.

The library or an
architecture firm

Both

Cell Membrane
Cell Wall
Endoplasmic
Reticulum
(ER)
Ribosome
Mitochondria
Vacuoles
Lysosome
Chloroplast
Golgi bodies
Questions:
1. What could represent the cytoplasm in the city?
2. The cell is the simplest part of a living thing that can perform life functions. Identify
which parts of the cell are involved in the life functions listed below. There might be
more than one.
a. Obtaining oxygen, water and food
b. Burning food to make energy for the cell
c. Building molecules
d. Getting rid of waste
e. Making food

f. Reproduction of the cell (well do this one together)

g. Moving things around

Cell City
Now, draw a city that has representations of each of the
organelles. These representations should be buildings or structures
and labeled as organelles that have the same function in a cell as
those structures have in the city.
You can use your book or notes to find the information about
the organelles. Your city needs to be colored and neatly drawn. Be
sure to include as much detail as you can.

Ex:

Cell wall
Cell membrane

Chloroplasts
Endoplasmic reticulum
Ribosome
Mitochondria
Vacuoles
Lysosomes
Golgi Bodies
