    The First Serbian Uprising began in 1804 as a revolt against defected janissaries known as the Dahije who had taken control of Serbia away from the Ottoman Empire. Led by Karađorđe, the Serbs fought against the Dahije and their leader Küçük Ali for independence. A series of battles were fought between the Serbs and Ottomans against the Dahije, culminating in victory for the Serbs and establishment of self-rule in Serbia for over a decade until the Ottomans reasserted control.
