Unit 1: Pre-production LO1

Comprehensively explain and present to a quality that reflects near-professional standards

fully detailed requirements and sources of requirements for a specific media production
TASK
From all the pre-production you have carried out over the past year you need to pick one
and complete the following task.
You will need to show an excellent understanding of the requirements for the proposed
production and will be able to explain fully why each element is required.
You will give detailed explanations of how these requirements will be sourced and give full
consideration to codes of practice and regulatory issues.
From the table below you need to explain why each element was important to your chosen
production and detail how you would source them.

Sourcing

Importance
It is important to have finances in place before production starts, as every
producer needs to pay for Equipment used such as Cameras, tripods, green
screen, lighting and sound. For an Advert production for example, a producer
may also need materials such correct costumes, items for correct mise-en-scene
and talent in order to fulfil the desired effect. Crew will also be needed such as
cameraman, soundman lighting engineer researchers editors and runners in order
to produce a professional looking advert.
Once all is complete facilities such as editing suits and postproduction equipment
will be needed and these cost a lot of money.
Sourcing
Crew
Crew can be sourced trough websites such as Creative England
http://www.creativeengland.co.uk/index.php/portfolio/locationproduction-support/
Editing suits such as Dynamic post Production
Facility
http://www.dynamicpost.co.uk/index.php/final-cut-pro-suites/
can be hired for 350 per day. This will include the editor and
sound engineer.
Materials
Materials can be sourced from high street shops, retail outlets
or studio Props departments
Transport
Transport can be sourced via Transport for London
http://www.tfl.gov.uk, National Rail http://www.nationalrail.co.uk,
hertz car hire etc..
A days travel card in London will cost the producer 12 per
person.

You can either create your own table or upload this one to Weebly and
complete. Either way, a table like the one below needs to be used.

Transport

Crew
Materials
Facility hire

Importance
Finance is of great importance as It enables producers to buy the
correct equipment and pay staff. For example in film Millions of
pounds are put into them to ensure equipment is payed for, staff are
payed for their work, certain sets can be built, locations can be
rented, props formise-en-scene, lighting can be used and actors can
be payed.

Time:

Deadlines
Availability of equipment
Availability of personnel (size
of team; roles)

Importance
Time is one of the biggest factors as there is always a deadline to
when the final product should be finished and ready to be shown, so
it is important to have smaller deadlines along the way to ensure
you keep on track. In film they would plan each day so everyone
knows what is happening and who should be where and when, and
because they are working with such a big team its important its
planned in advance so everyone else can plan ahead. The schedule
would also work around availability of locations, equipment and
actors, as the film would not be able to be made if they are not
available and they might to make the deadline.

Facilities:

Production equipment
Post-production equipment
facility houses

Importance
The importance of facilities is high as facilities are a key part of
making a professional production. You need Production equipment in
order to actually film like cameras, lights, reflectors and tripods, all
these are necessary for making a professional looking production.
Post-Production equipment is for making those finishing touches like
colour correction and editing clips, this is key as it finishes the
production off and the production could not be finished with out it.

Materials:

Original materials,
Archive and library materials
Photo-library materials
Sound library materials,
Internet
Audio
Script (upload an example)
Interviews

Costumes

Importance
It is important to have original material as theses materials make
your productions unique and original, they make it your own and
enable you to have the exact thing you want as you make it and
have the story follow what you have written. For instance If you
needed a photo of the family in your production in a photo frame
you couldnt source one as no one else looks like your family so you
would have to take the photo yourself.
Archive material would be used because they are easier to get and
less time consuming if you need a generic sound or photo then it
would be perfect. like if you needed an establishing shot in the air of
a beach but you don't have a drone you could source a clip from the
inter net then just fill the rest of the scene on a different beach.

Sourcing
Original material is filmed by the director but archive footage for
productions can be found at

Locations:

Recces (Upload an example)

Limitations and risks:
Distance, access, cost, weather

Importance
Locations enable a production to become more real as the
environment used Is real instead of make believe. In film there is a
whole group off people designated to finding and renting locations
to film in show how important it is. It is important that other factors
are taken in to consideration when choosing a location as well, like
distance, access, cost and weather and weather they over way how
good the location is.

Codes of
practice and
regulation:

Location permissions
Clearances
Copyright
Health and safety
Insurance

Importance
Codes or practice ensure that no legal action will be taken and that
you do not get fined. Location permissions, Clearances, Copyright,
Health and safety and Insurance are all thing to consider if any of
these are breeched legal action may be taken and cost you a lot of
money which would not be incorporated in your budget, so it is
important all of these are taken care of and you have physical proof.

Sourcing
You can't source these but here are some websites to help with
them and tell you what you need.
