$50,000 JUMPSTART FOR NEW TREATMENT PROGRAM AT ANUVIA
Physicians Impact Fund Awards Anuvia Prevention and Recovery Center with
$50,000 to Help Start a New Integrated Care Program for Dually Diagnosed Patient.
Charlotte NC Jan 21, 2015- With the help of Physicians Impact Funds award of
$50,000, Anuvia Prevention and Recovery Center is now providing an integrated
care program for patients with severe mental disorders and co-occurring substance
abuse. Traditionally, patients with this dual- diagnosis received treatment for their
disorders from two different sets of clinicians in parallel treatment systems.
However, dissatisfaction with this clinical practice led to the development of new
integrated treatment models, like that of Anuvias, involving the same set of
clinicians providing substance abuse treatment as well as mental health treatment
in a harmonious fashion.
A National Institute on Drug Abuse study shows there continues to be a large
treatment gap in the United States. In 2012, an estimated 23.1 million Americans
(8.9 percent) needed treatment for a problem related to drugs or alcohol, but only
about 2.5 million people (1 percent) received treatment at a specialty facility. The
Physicians Impact Fund award will offset gaps between revenue and expenses
during the programs initial start-up. These gaps are to be expected because of
Anuvias commitment to serve the uninsured individuals of the Greater Charlotte
area.
Psychiatric Services and Medication Management are part of the new integrated
care programs initiated at Anuvia in September 2014. This program is currently in
its start-up phase and increasing enrollment gradually. According to Anuvias
historical census data, fully implemented, integrated care will provide timely
psychiatric consultations and medication assistance for 200+ clients each year. The
total expected budget for this program is $122,348. Anuvia requested $50,000 from
Physicians Impact Fund and was awarded the full amount. Anuvia also
implemented a comprehensive fundraising plan in March 2014 designed to cultivate
corporate and individual donors. The Mecklenburg County ABC Board has agreed to
be a funding partner of the program as well for the first year.
Many benefits will come from this new integrated care program such as, higher
completion rates in substance abuse treatment programs, reduction in relapses,
quick turnarounds for psychiatric appointments, access to affordable medications,
improved mental health, tracking for long-term recovery and less strain on
community and hospital resources. It is expected 60 percent of enrollees will report
a decrease in mental health symptoms within four weeks and 80 percent of
enrollees will report full satisfaction with the service.
