Self-Designed Experience Proposal
Basic Information
Full Name: Elizabeth Wiecek
Title of Project: Artist Immersion in Italy
Thematic Area(s): Global Studies and Creativity
Expected Start Date: April 27, 2016
Expected End Date: May 11, 2016
GUIDELINES
1. Proposal submission timeline: Proposals should be submitted at least one month prior to the expected
start date of the experience. International experiences require at least two months notice. Contact your
honors advisor immediately for any exceptions.
2. Proposal length: While the quality of the proposal is most important, strong proposals are typically 3-4
pages single-spaced.
3. Proposal format: Please maintain the proposal format (e.g. headers, layout)
4. Time commitment: Experiences should consist of at least 75-90 hours of preparation, execution, and
reflection. This is approximately equivalent to the commitment of honors seminars and pre-approved
experiences.
1. Abstract
Briefly describe the experience. What makes this experience personally meaningful? What goals do you have for this
experience? What is your timeline for this experience?
*If you are proposing an international experience, provide an itinerary.
**If you are developing this experience from an existing opportunity (class with a study tour, campus organization, co-op,
etc.) that is not already an honors seminar or pre-approved experience, how will you differentiate your experience from
what is already required of other students?
Through UC International, I will join a group of students in traveling to the Italian countryside to study painting and
architecture for two weeks. We will reside in a villa just outside of Rome, and we will spend most of our time hiking
and/or traveling to different locations for us to paint. I havent had much training in painting, so I find this trip to be very
significant to me. I will be under the instruction of great mentors, and we will be utilizing landscapes that many great
artists, designers, and architects have painted and explored in the past. Besides the training in painting, we will also
experience everyday Italian life. On the villa we will be served traditional organic six-course meals and interact with
employees and residents. We we also take trips to several larger cities, most notably, Pienza, Florence, and Rome. In
doing so, we will explore the different planning and architecture and how the people interact with it, for Italy is a place
where art and everyday lifestyles are one. I want to experience this different paradigm and take in its beauty, and I also
want to discover how I can apply this way of living to my own life once I return.
To differentiate my experience from others on the trip, I will spend each day questioning what exactly makes the Italian
lifestyle so unique. I will seek out anecdotes from natives and reflect on how I can bring their mentality to my own life.
In addition, I will immerse myself in more traditional Italian music and dance in order to compose my own dance piece
both to remind me of my experience and to share with my past dance studio.
We do not have an official itinerary yet, but the general timeline is that we would arrive in Rome on April 27 th and then all
travel to the villa together. That first week we would start working on the basics of drawing and painting in the
countryside. That weekend we would take a trip to a larger city. That next week we would continue developing more
complex painting skills still while hiking through the countryside and small villages of Italy. That next weekend we
would travel to a couple more cities. Then we would return back to the United States.

2. Experience Advisor
Identify an experience advisor and provide their contact information. Explain why you chose this person and how you
plan to utilize your advisor for this experience.
3
Note: Advisor(s) should have knowledge or expertise in an area related to the experience. Honors advisors, undergraduate
students, and family members cannot be experience advisors.
Catherine Richards: mobile phone (216)-513-5862
My experience advisor will be Catherine Richards. She is one of the coordinators/ instructors for this trip. She has led
this particular study abroad experience for five years, and she is currently in instructor within DAAPs School of Design.
I expect that she will help me immensely in improving my painting skills, and I believe her broad knowledge of Italys art,
architecture, and culture will put me on the right track for fulfilling my more introspective goals of better embracing the
Italian lifestyle. I plan on meeting with her at least once before the trip to explain to her my more specific goals and to
seek advice on how to achieve them during the trip.

5. On-going Reflection
The on-going reflection should help you process the experience and progress toward your chosen learning outcomes.
Describe your method for reflecting throughout the experience. Indicate specific reflection questions/topics you plan to
use to guide your reflective process.
Note: A variety of methods can be used for on-going reflection. Some examples are videos, drawings, blogs, songs, and
journals. Reflection topics to consider include your ideas/insights about the experience, connection to other areas of
involvement, and your progress towards the learning outcomes.
In order to reflect during my trip, I will journal every night and collect photographs as we go along our travels. In my
journal entries I will ask myself what did I learn while painting today?, what aspect of the Italian culture did I
discover?, how can I continue to improve my painting skills?, and what other way as art/culture influenced my day
and how can I bring this to my life back home?. The journaling and questions will remind me of my goals and also
simply what happened that day. The photographs will aid in remembering how I felt in the environment and how I can
strive to experience those feelings even outside of Italy.
