y =m
mx + b
(m) stands for slope – it
defines the steepness of a
line. It is the coefficient of
x or multiplier of x. Slope
always has an x after it.
y =mmx + b
Ex: y = 5x - 2

Therefore the slope (m) is

5 or /15
y = mx + b
b
(b) stands for y-intercept
– the point where the line
crosses the y-axis.
y = mx + b
b
Ex: y = 5x - 2
Therefore the y-intercept (b) is
-2
y = 1mx + b
Ex: y = /2x + 6
m = ½ and b = 6
Therefore the slope of the
given equation rises 1 units
and runs 2 units ; and crosses
the y-axis at 6.
Let’s Examine:
Ex: y = /2x + 3
1

Slope(m) is 1/2 so the line rises

1 unit and runs 2 units and the
y-intercept(b) is 3 so it crosses
the y-axis at 3.
Let’s Examine:
Ex: y = - 3x + 5

Slope(m) is -3 or -3/1 so the line

falls 3 units and runs 1 units and
the y-intercept(b) is 5 so it
crosses the y-axis at 5.
Now you know
y = mx + b
Let’s
Graph!
Ex: y = /2x - 5
3

m = /2
3 and b=-5
Ex: y = – /3x + 4 2

m =- 2 / 3 and b=4
Ex: y = x + 2
m =1 or /1
1 and b =2
Ex: y = 2x
true form: y = 2x + 0
m =2 or /1 and b =0
2
Ex: y = -3
true form: y = 0x - 3
m =0 ,0/1 ,or 0/n and b =-3
Finally: x=2
a nonfunction not nin y =mx + b
m =undefined , /0, ?????
no y-intercept exist but
x-intercept = 2
crossing x-axis at 2.
Let’s Review
Ex: y = 4/7x + 3
m = 4/7 and b =3
Ex: y = – 2/5x - 6
m = - 2/5 and b =- 6
Ex: y = – 3/4x
m = - 3/4 and b =0
Ex: x = –3 ,n/0, ?????
m =undefined
x-intercept at -3
