Facts:Inthesummermonthsof2002,therehadbeenarashofmurdersinsouthernLouisiana.
Aspecialtaskforcewasformedtosolvethesemurders.InAprilof2003,theBatonRouge
CrimeStoppers(BRCS)advertisedthroughtheuseofnewspaper,televisionandbillboards
declaringanofferof$100,000rewardforinformationregadingtheidentity,captureand
prosecutionoftheserialkiller.LafayetteCrimeStoppersmadeasimilaroffer.BothCrime
StoppersincludedadeadlineofAugust1,2003.
OnJuly9,2002,DiannAlexanderwasattackedinherhome.Hersoncameinontheattacker
andwasabletochasehimaway.BothMsAlexanderandhersonwe'reabletogiveadescription
oftheattacker.totheirlocalpolice.TheninMayof2003shemadefurtherstatementstothe
specialtaskforceaswellastheFBI.InlateMayof2003,shemadeapositiveidentificationofa
suspectfromapolicelineup..AroundmidAugust,Ms.AlexandercontactedtheCrimeStoppers
forpaymentofthereward.Shewasdeniedandshesued.
Issue:TheissueinthiscaseiswasthereavalidcontractbetweenMs.AlexanderandCrime

Rules:Apublicofferthatismadeintheformofanadvertisement(newspapers,television,or
billboards)isregardedasalegitimateoffer.Whensomeoneacceptstheofferandactsuponthe
requirementslistedintheoffer,thenthisbecomesanenforceablecontract.
Analysis:Inthiscase,thedefendants,CrimeStoppers,claimedtherewasnocontractbetween
themandMs.Alexander.Foracontracttobevalid,acceptanceofanoffer(suchastheone
madeintheadvertisementsmadebyCrimeStoppers)forarewardisrequired.Eventhoughthe
publicappealandofferwasmade,Ms.Alexanderdidnotaccepttheofferthroughtheproper
requirements.BothBRCSandtheLCSreportedintheirrespectiveoffers,thattheinformation
mustbecalledinontheirhotlinesandthatthedeadlinetodosowasbyAugust1,2003.Ms.
Alexanderdidneither.Herinformationwasreportedtothepoliceandshedidnotcontactthe
CrimeStoppersdirectly,norbythedeadlinedate.
