Lets Review
What happens to the temperature of a gas if

you squeeze it into a smaller volume?

Demonstration
What temperature does the air start

at?
What happens to the temperature
when the pressure is increased?
What

happens to the temperature

when the pressure is decreased again?

Think about it
Record observations on page 37 while you

watch the demonstration

Answer the questions after the demonstration

is complete

Still thinking
How can you explain the change in temperature as

you changed the gas volume by squeezing the

bottle?

How is the bottle demonstration similar to what

happened inside a syringe when you pushed in

the plunger?
How do you think the temperature changes

inside of the syringe when the air is compressed

with the plunger?

Still thinking
When we put more pressure on the gases, did

the temperature increase or decrease?

It increased

When we released the pressure, what

happened to the temperature?

It decreased

Summary
When a gas is compressed into a smaller

volume, or when gas molecules are forced

into a given volume, more collisions occur.
This results in increased temperature.
When pressure is reduced on a gas, it
expands. There are fewer collisions between
gas molecules. Fewer collisions results in
decreased temperature.

Clouds
What is a cloud? What is it made of?
Where do clouds come from? How do you

think they form?

Cloud in a bottle
How can I get water vapor into the air in the

bottle?
How can I increase the energy inside the
bottle?
When I pumped some additional air into the
bottle what happened to the air pressure
inside the bottle?
It increased

When I increased the pressure, what

happened to the temperature?

It increased

Will the air in the bottle hold more or less water

vapor when the pressure goes up?

More, because the temperature will go up. Warm air

can hold more water vapor than cold air.

What might happen to the temperature when I

release the pressure in the bottle?

The pressure will drop, the temperature should

decrease

What might happen to the water vapor if the

temperature decrease?
It could reach the dew point and condense, forming

water droplets, and maybe a cloud

When the air temperature reaches the dew

point, what happens to the water vapor in the

air?
It condenses

Clouds
Clouds are made of tiny droplets of

condensed liquid water. The droplets form

visible clouds and fog.

Precipitation
Definition
Water that falls from the sky
Are dew and frost forms of precipitation?
No, they dont fall from clouds
What is the difference between snow and

rain?
Rain is liquid water, snow is frozen water

How might precipitation form?

Pressure decreases which make temperature
decrease to the dew point and water vapor in
the air condenses
