THE HERO'S JOURNEY tead-write-think wos NCTE Your name: Eric Lee Ta Project title: Lord of the Rings t Name and describe the Hero The hero symbolizes important ideals and values of his or her home culture. Frodo Baggins is a brave, but sometimes selfish hero. He was in his thirties as a male, small and weak, not knowing anything in the beginning. Experiencing hardships, Frodo gains wisdom that could finally lead to the destruction of the One Ring at Mount Doom in Mordor. As a hobbit, Frodo was quick and witty enough to pass fatal dangers barely. Unusual birth The hero's birth is surrounded by unusual circumstances. Born on the same day as Bilbo Baggins, his uncle, it was possible for Bilbo to escape while Frodo got the ring of power. Bilbo threw a big birthday celebration, and using this, Frodo was able to gain the ring. If it was not for the same birthday, there would have been no way for Bilbo to leave the ring nor give it to Frodo. The call to adventure The hero is called to leave home, and he or she willingly or unwillingly goes. Gandalf urges Frodo to set out on a quest to destroy the ring of power. However, Frodo is reluctant to leave his home in Shire. After this, Frodo is attacked by the Ringwraiths (Sauron's minions who are ordered to find the ring). NODE Project title: Lord of the Rings Supernatural helper The hero is aided by someone, often old and wise, with magical and mystical power. The Fellowship of the Ring is assembled at the Council of Elrond in Rivendell. They always assist Frodo to destroy the ring and ultimately killing Dark Lord, Sauron. Each of the company were representatives of their race: Aragorn, Gandalf, and Boromir as humans, Gimli the Dwarf, and Legolas the Elf. They have pledged to protect and guide Frodo. » Talisman or special weapon The hero has a weapon or protective device given to him or her that will be useful on the journey. Sting, an ancient Elvish blade, was given by Bilbo Baggins to Frodo before he set to Mordor to destroy the ring. However, it was entrusted to his servant, Sam Gamgee, who would save Frodo from the venomous spider, Shelob. The One Ring was more useful to Frodo than the sword. Wearing it would make him invisible from dangers. He used this to pass many fatal perils. x Crossing the threshold The hero leaves the familiar, safe world of home and enters fully into the new world of the journey. With aid from the Fellowship, Frodo Baggins sets out on his long journey to Mount Doom in Mordor, the only volcano the One Ring can be destroyed. NODE Project title: Lord of the Rings Ag Trials The hero has to succeed at a series of trials that challenge and build his or her moral strength and character. Frodo journeys over mountain passes, barely escapes. the wrath of Balrog, becomes allies with the elves, almost captured by Saruman, attacked by Gollum, and nearly eaten to death by Shelob the spider. With these events, Frodo gains experience that would lead up to the bravery of the destruction of the ring. X Achievement of goal Upon successful completion of the trials, the hero achieves the goal of the journey. The achievement is the destruction of the One Ring in Mount Doom and the victory of the prowess of the Fellowship and its allies. - Reconciliation with a father-figure If a division or conflict with the hero's father or father- figure is part of the hero's journey, reconciliation or healing with the father occurs. Frodo meets Bilbo again on his stay at Rivendell. Bilbo wanted to take the ring from Frodo, but he refrained himself from doing so. Bilbo realizes that he must have went mentally insane fro doing so, and gives up the desire of the One Ring entirely. THE HERO'S JOURNEY Your name: Eric Lee Project title: Lord of the Rings Return home The hero, sometimes willingly and sometimes unwillingly, again crosses the threshold and returns home. Frodo returns to Shire with greater friendship and relationships. Frodo, however, with too much knowledge of the Middle-Earth wishes to go to the Undying Lands to live peacefully for the rest of his life.
