Chapter 1
Using this Template

1.1

Front Matter

This document template will help you in preparing your thesis. You will
need to modify or supply appropriate details for front matter, i.e. title
page declaration, approval sheet, etc. For example, insert title of your
thesis, your name, degree, date of submission etc for the title page.
Similarly modify other front matter pages as and where required.
1.1.1 Committee members
The committee consists of a chairman, adviser(s) and examiners. You
need to insert name and affiliation for each of them (below dotted line
provided for signature) in approval sheet. In case you do not have coadviser, remove that part.
1.1.2 Acknowledgements
This is optional. You may write your own acknowledgement in this page.
If you prefer to not write one, remove this page.
1.1.3 Dedication
This is optional. If you decide to dedicate your work to some one, use this
page. If you prefer to not do so, remove this page.
1.1.4 Contents
The Table of contents is generated Automatically. You do not have to
type entries in contents page. When you have added all your chapters
and sections etc, right click on contents and select update fields, and
then select update entire table. Table of contents will be generated for
you automatically.

1.1.5 Fonts
The fonts used for thesis document should be CMU Serif Roman. You
may need to download and install this font. This font is available freely on
many servers. You can find the font library by searching for Computer
Modern Unicode font.

Chapter 2
Creating New Chapter

1.2

Create copy of one of the chapters

Copy any existing chapter and paste where you want to insert a new
chapter. For example you can copy chapter 1: Using this Template. Click:
show all nonprinting characters. You will now see the chapter name is
followed by code { TC 1 Using this Template \f C \l 1 }. You need
to modify the chapter number and name, which appear in quotes. Again
click: hide all nonprinting characters.
1.2.1 New chapter on new page
Insert a page break after every chapter to ensure that new chapter starts
on a new page.

1.3

Citation

At the end of the thesis you need to include References section, where
you can list all relevant documents that are cited in the thesis. See
References section for formatting for citations. You are encouraged to use
EndNote for automatic citation generation.
1.3.1 Single citation
Citations should appear as shown here [1] and numbered in the order of
apperance.
1.3.2 Multiple citation
Multiple citations should appear in the same bracket [1, 2] or if you want
to cite more than two references in one place use [2-4].

Chapter 3
Figures

1.4

Referencing figures

The figure where ever possible must be center aligned. Each figure must
have a caption below the figure and should be center aligned. Every
single figure in the document must be referred in the text. For example
IITH logo is displayed in Figure 3 .1. You should use Caption and Crossreference features of Microsoft Word for automatic numbering and
reference updating.

Figure 3.1: IITH logo

Use Fig. to refer to a figure if the reference to it appears not at the

beginning of a sentence. If the sentence starts with reference to figure
use Figure. For instance refer to the following text. Figure
compressed logo of IITH.

1.5

Referencing tables

The tables where ever possible must be center aligned. Each table must
have a caption above the table and should be center aligned. Every
single table in the document must be referred in the text. Use Caption
and Cross-reference feature of Microsoft Word. For instance see Table 4 .
