Wonder Weebly AssignmentPart 1 Plot Summary

During part 1 of the book Wonder, We get a glimpse of what life is like for
a ten year old boy named August Pullman. He has a deformed face and
has been through many operations to fix his mouth as he had a cleft
palate. He had four operations to fix his mouth but it was not fully
corrected and now has to live with this problem. He had to be homeschooled for his whole life, not seeing much of the outside world until his
parents Isabel and Nate Pullman, decide to enter him into Beecher Prep as
a year 5 student at the start of the school year. August was eavesdropping
in a car ride from a friends house named Christopher in Bridgeport
(childhood friend of August). They talked to each other about having to
protect August and how he could get bullied at school for the way he
looked. August immediately awoke from a deep sleep when he heard the
words He will be like a lamb to the slaughter. This comment was from
his father about his thoughts. After this August worries about what school
will be like and how people will react to his deformed face. Soon after
August and his mother have a school tour of Beecher Prep. Here they are
introduced to the principal of the school Mr. Tushman, Mrs. Garcia who is
the assistant of the principal. Here they meet the principal and Mr.
Tushman explains about the different features of the school and invites 3
students named Jack will, Julian and Charlotte to take him on a school tour
of the different types of rooms around the school. We come across the
different types of personalities of the students, Jack Will being a friendly
and inviting friend, Charlotte being warm hearted and a friendly person,
Julian being a little bit curious at times quite rude as he asks questions
why his face is like it is. August starts school and immediately notices
people staring and avoiding eye contact. He settles in at school and starts
to make friends with new people in his homeroom and classes. He makes
friends with a girl named summer who decides to sit next to him at lunch
and starts to talk and get friendly with him. He is enjoying school and
looking forward to the upcoming dress-ups for Halloween, his favourite
time of the year. He makes a new costume of Bobba Fett, (Augusts
desired Star-Wars character). He then changes costumes because he
realises Julian is going as the same and goes as Jango Fett. The problem
is, the morning of Halloween, August was in a rush to get to school as his
father had a meeting. The Jango Fett costume was too hard to put on so
he just put on a Ghost costume from the previous year. When he arrived
at school he realised Julian was talking to a group of friends about August.
He eavesdropped and heard terrible things from a voice that sounded like
Jack Wills. He knew it was him and caught him saying I mean, the things
is: he always follows me around. What am I supposed to do? Julian
Answered, just ditch him. This was the worst- best day of Augusts life.
