    Bar mitzvah was more fun than I thought it would be and not as boring as many people had told me it would be. The fact that I am not Jewish did not hinder my experience, except for the fact that I did not understand when Hebrew was spoken and all the prayers were said. My favorite part of the service was the music, which was played along to every prayer that was sung.

    Ihadbeentoquiteafewbar/batmitzvahswhenIwasinmiddleschool,butIhadonly
    gonetooneoftheservicesbefore.IrememberthatitwasmuchmorefunthanIhadthoughtit
    wouldbe,andnotasboringasmanypeoplehadtoldmeitwouldbe.However,thistimeIhadto
    observetheservicemorecarefullyinordertowritemyreflection.Previously,itwasmoreabout
    havingfunwithfriendsthantakingnoteoftheculturalandreligiouspracticesthattookplace.
    OneofthethingsIlikedbestabouttheservicewashowinteractiveitwas.ThefactthatI
    amnotJewishdidnothindermyexperienceatall,exceptforthefactthatIdidnotunderstand
    whenHebrewwasspokenandalltheprayersweresaid,althoughitwasexplainedtomeafterthe
    ceremony.Personally,myfavoritepartoftheservicewasthemusic.Theleaderoftheservice
    wasaCantor,whichislikearabbithatcansingprayersproperly.Hehadbroughthisguitarwith
    himandheplayedalongtoeveryprayerthatwassung.Inmyownreligion,theprayersarealso
    sung,butonlybytheleadersoftheservice.Here,eventhoughIdidnotknowtheprayers,I
    couldeitherreadalongorclapmyhands,likemanyotherpeopleweredoing.Ialsolikedthe
    servicebecauseitwasnotboringordryinanyway.Inadditiontothemusic,everyonedanced
    thehora,whichhelpedtomixfunandreligion.
    Overall,IamhappythatIpayedcloseattentiontotheceremonythistime.Previously,I
    hadviewedbar/batmitzvahsasmoreofaparty,likeaSweet16.Thistime,Iwasshownthatitis
    animportantriteofpassage,evenforpeoplewhoarenotextremelyreligious.Notonlywasthe
    ceremonyawaytoshowfaithtotheGodAdonoi,butitisawaytobringfamilytogether.
    EveryonewasextremelyhappyforMatthew(thebarmitzvahboy)andwereallunitedasa
    family,nomatterhowextendedtherelativeswere.Goingtothebarmitzvahwasalearning
    experiencethathelpedtoextendmyknowledgeofJudaism.
