DEVIATION FROM SOCIAL NORMS
This is when people dont act in accordance to the implicit rules of society. For
example walking down the street naked.
Evaluation:
Cultural relativisms: social norms are different in different cultures.
Independence in some collectivist cultures would be seen as a a deviation from
social norm. this cultural variation means that it is not a universal definition for
abnormality.
Social norms also change over time, for example homosexuality in the 1930
nwouold have been seen as a deviation from social norms.
Also this definition can be abused by the government, in order to prosecute
without legal standing. For example protesters can would be seen as deviants
and therefore abnormal.
FAILURE TO FUNCTION ADEQUATELY
This is characterised by displaying behaviour that inhibits normal day to day
living. It is characterised by unpredictability, irrationality, maladaptivness and
leads to observer discomfort.
