GUIDELINES
1. Proposalsubmissiontimeline:Proposalsshouldbesubmittedatleastonemonthpriortotheexpected

3. Proposalformat:Pleasemaintaintheproposalformat(e.g.headers,layout)
4. Timecommitment:Experiencesshouldconsistofatleast7590hoursofpreparation,execution,and
reflection.Thisisapproximatelyequivalenttothecommitmentofhonorsseminarsandpreapproved
experiences.

REQUIREMENTSFORINTERNATIONALTRAVEL
Allselfdesignedinternationaltravelexperiencesrequiretwomonthsnoticeandmustbeatleastoneweekin
length.Youwillneedtoprovideadetaileditinerary(dates,locationsandactivities).Ifparticipatingin
independenttravel(notwithUCfaculty,stafforstudentgroup),youmustalsofilloutaWorldwide:Honors
ExperienceapplicationviaUCInternational.

Additionally,theStudentTravelPolicyrestrictsUCsponsoredtraveltocountriesunderaU.S.Departmentof
StateTravelWarning.Thosewhowishtovisitacountrywithatravelwarningmustseekanexemptionthrough
UCInternational.Studentstravelingwithoutafacultyorstaffleadermustindividuallyrequestanexemption.
Wecannotallowyoutocountthistravelasanhonorsexperiencenorcanwegiveyouagrantwithoutan
approvedexemption.

Itstartswithmaybealittlebitofmemorylossforgettingabirthday,orthatitisSaturday.ButthenAlzheimersand
Dementiaescalateuntilitbecomesforgettingwholerelationships,forgettingdaughtersandgrandsons.Agingwiththese
twodisordersisalittlelikegettingyearspeeledoffoftheselfuntilitisunrecognizable.Often,whenpeoplewithmore
severeAlzheimersanddementiaareaskediftheycanrememberanythingtheymightbeunabletoengageorcant
physicallyrememberanything.Thatiswheremusiccomesin.MusicfromtheirchildhoodforinstancesomeNatKing
Coleallowstheremembranceofthatentiretimeperiodoftheirlives.Therehasbeensomeresearchdoneonthiswith
peoplewhohaveAlzheimersanddementiawithastonishingresultspeoplewhoarepreviouslyunresponsivecanwake
upandconnectwiththosearoundthem.
ThegoalforthisexperienceistodistributemixCDstonursinghomes,withafocusonpeoplecurrentlysufferingfrom
Alzheimersordementia.Inalargerway,wewouldlikethenursinghomewearevisitingtoreconsiderthelackofmusic
inthelobbyandpatientrooms.Whilethetelevisionisalwayson,musicisrarelybeingplayed.Iwouldliketoincrease
awarenessoftheimpactofmusiconreengagingindividuals!Iwouldalsoliketomakeplayingmusicforthesepatients
partofthenormfornursinghomes.Onamoresimplisticlevel,thisprojectwillattheveryleastdistributeCDs
individualizedtothepatientsatthesenursinghomes.

1 Oursharedvisionisfairlyobviouswewanttorestoresomesenseofidentitytopeoplein
nursinghomessufferingfromAlzheimersordementia.Wearegoingtodothisthroughtheuse
ofmusicfromtheirchildhood/past.Asforforminggoalstowardsitsachievement,thesearealso
prettysimpleandexciting.Wearegoingtomeetwiththenursinghometoformconnections
first,andthemeetsomepatientstoestablishasortofbaselineforthemusicthattheylistenedto.
Ideally,wewouldlikethemtotellustheartistsandsongstheylikedbutgiventhepopulation
thatwewillbeworkingwiththatmightnotbepossible.
Motivateandcollaborateeffectivelywithotherstowardscompletionofsharedprojectsorgoals.
Thereisnowaythisprojectwillbepossiblealoneeventhoughonpaperitisprettysimple,it
definitelyrequiresateam.NotonlyateamofUCstudentstoachievethegatheringofsupplies,
theselectionofsongsandtheinteractionwiththepatients.Butmorethanthat,wearegoingto
needtogetinvolvedwiththestaffatthenursinghomeandthepatientsthemselves.Becausethis
projectisorientedtowardspeopleitwilldefinitelyrequirealotofsocialmaneuvering.
Explainhoweducation,advocacy,mobilization,orpublicpolicycaninfluencesocialissuesandtransform
communities.
Oneofthelargergoalswiththisprojectistoshowtheimpactthatmusiccanhaveonthis
particularpopulation.Wewanttoshowthenursinghomethatthisworkhasvalueandwithany
luck,getthispublicizedsothattheknowledgecanspreadbeyondjustthesepatientsatthis
nursinghome.Wewouldlovethisprojecttoinfluencefamilieswithamembersufferingfrom

AlzheimersorDementia,andothercareprogramsthatfocusontheelderly.Thishopefullywill
transformattitudestowardsthevalueofmusicandarttherapy,andalsotheperceptionofpeople
withAlzheimersanddementia.Frequently,thereistheperspectivethatpeoplewiththese
neurologicaldisordersarelost,butwithmusictherapy,hopefullyitwillgivefamiliesa
glimpseofthepersonunderneath.
