Challenge Part 1: Mutual Exclusivity and Student

Scientists
None of these are the same- How are they
different?

Sort these 12 plant samples into 4 mutually exclusive groups.

Sort your plants into four mutually exclusive groups.

Write why youve placed them there. Hide your
reasoning!

Move one group left, try and guess how theyve classified their plants and
write this on the paper provided, then fold it to cover your writing and leave it
at the station.
Move one more group left and repeat.

What were some mutually exclusive characteristics that you

found?

Challenge Part 2: The Four Phyla

Use the chart provided to sort your plants into the mutually
exclusive groups generated by scientists.
When a teacher has checked your grouping and said youre
correct, use your chromebook to try and find the titles for
each of the four groups or phyla.

Can you trick Ms. Pike?

Now that you have your plants grouped correctly, think about your groups
process:
Did you have difficulty placing any of your plants?
Choose one plant to place in the wrong group that you think
Ms. Pike will not be able to figure out is in the wrong place.
If you successfully fool Ms. Pike, you get to pick a prize!
