ACCELERATED SCIENCE 7

Course Outline
Mr. Yaw
2015-2016
UNITS :
I.

MATTER: BUILDING BLOCK OF THE UNIVERSE

II. CHEMICAL INTERACTIONS

III. MOTION, FORCES, AND ENERGY
IV. SOUND AND LIGHT
V. Electricity and Magnetism
MATERIALS :
-1 inch Binder
-2 Composition Notebooks

-Loose Leaf Paper

-Colored Pencils
-Calculator (same as math)

HOMEWORK :
Independent practice of course material is the best way to see how well you understand it.
For this reason homework is assigned every night with usually one night off per week,
each assignment should take approximately 10-20 minutes. Homework is a significant
part of the course and important to your progress and will be checked often.
Homework grades are determined as follows:
On time, complete and accurate
Turned in by the end of the day
Turned in the day after it is due
Any time after

Maximum of 100% credit

Maximum of 75% credit
Maximum of 50% credit
0%

If homework becomes a problem parents will be contacted. Students are responsible

for getting work missed during an absence. The due date will only be extended 1 day for
each day absent. Coded grade sheets will be located on the bulletin board indicating all
assignments given and the scores earned on them, use these sheets to check your
progress. Remember that you alone control your success in this course.
LABORATORIES :
Science is very hands-on and requires the ability to think critically, analyze situations,
and solve problems. Therefore, we will conduct as many activities, laboratories, and
investigations as possible to explore the world of physical science. Being absent for a lab
or activity does not excuse you from turning it in, they will be treated just like homework
assignments. It is the students responsibility to make up all missed work.

GRADING :
Your grade in this course will be determined by your success in the following areas:
-homework assignments
-quizzes
-preparation/participation points
-laboratory activities
-chapter tests
-final exam
Students with a 5-week grade below 85 will be considered on academic watch.
If the 1st quarter mark is still below 85, it will be the recommendation of the
teacher that the student be removed from the accelerated science program.
CLASSROOM RULES :
The rule that will run our classroom is RESPECT. You will be required to demonstrate
respect for yourself, classmates, teachers, the classroom, and materials. You will have
my respect the moment you enter the room, I will expect the same from you.
DISCIPLINE :
Every week each student can receive a maximum of 16 preparation/participation points.
That turns in to 160 points every quarter. 8 of these points are earned by bringing the
necessary materials to class every day. The other 8 points are linked to positive
participation during class. Each student will begin every week with 4 orange cards for
being prepared and 4 yellow cards for good participation. Each card is worth 2 points.
Inappropriate behavior or lack of positive participation during class will cause you to lose
one of your cards, lowering your weekly point value. If all 4 yellow cards are lost, all 8
points are taken away and the student will be sent to the office. Repeatedly being late to
class will also result in a discipline referral to the office

LETS HAVE A GREAT

YEAR!!!!
