The librarians of Skokie School in Winnetka have been given the
opportunity to expand their collection of materials that relate to special
needs. This particular public school services 5th and 6th grade students. The
following bibliography contains content that is appropriate for a variety of
learning types and includes 4th to 7th grade reading levels. The selections
discuss issues of autism, dyslexia, synesthesia, as well as physical

the staff that by adding these invaluable, highly-recommended resources
that the student population will become even more united as awareness is

Five diverse voices come together to tell the story of August (Auggie),
including Auggie himself, Auggies sister, two of his friends at school,
and his sisters former friend, who was born with a rare genetic disorder
that has left him malformed. This is the perfect read-aloud for all ages,
especially at the beginning of the school year when teachers discuss
classroom policy and character development, as this book demonstrates
how detrimental it is to judge a book by its cover.
