IamsittinginaclassroominaglobalstudiesprograminahighschoolinCentralTexas,
speakingSpanishorperhapsFrenchandtalkingtomypeersaboutmyheritagewhichisrootedin
NorthAfricaandWesternEurope.InmynextclassImaybewatchingavideoaboutthe
successesofChinesecivilizationandafterschool,Iamattendingameetingforaserviceproject
inLatinAmerica.IamonlyasophomoreyetIamalreadyconnectedtotheworldinseveral
uniquewaystherefore,TedGillneysGlobalEducationMissestheMarkangersmeasa
studentlearningabouttheworld.Hispurposeinwritingthearticleappearstobetodisregardthe
successesofEasternCivilizationandtopromotehisownsenseofnationalism.Heseemstomiss
thepointthattheonlywayAmericawillachievepeacefulforeignrelationsisthroughteaching
globalcurriculumtotheyounggenerationoffutureleadersandinnovators.
Gillneysopinionisverybiased,andheoffendsmultipleethnicgroupsinhisarticle.He
useshisbeliefinChristianityastheultimatefaithinhisargumentthathisreligionistheonlyone
thatstudentsshouldbelearninginschools.HestatesJesusChrististheAmericanhero.Thisis
arejectionofotherreligions,displayspoorcharacterandsendsabadmessagetostudents:that
religioustolerationshouldnotbeaccepted.TheauthoralsodisregardstheNativepeoplesofthe
Americas.Hestatesthattheywerenotsophisticatedsocietiesandthattheirculturedidnot
matteruntiltheSpanishexplorersandmissionariesarrivedwiththetruegospel.Furthermore,
theauthorbegstoaskifnativecivilizationsoftheAmericasweresocomplexand
unsophisticated,whyweretheyunabletodefeatourwarriors?Betweentheyearsof1521to
1523oftheSpanishconquest,overathirdoftheMayanpopulationwaseradicated(Minister).
ThecolonistsbroughtdiseasesinadvertentlyfromtheOldWorldandannihilatedthelandand
cropsoftheindigenouspeoples.Thenativepeopledidnotpossestheweaponrytodefend
themselvesmostlikelybecausetheydidnothavethesameconceptofwarastheEuropeans,and
therefore,hadnoneedforsucharmsofdestruction.
TheauthormakesaclaimthatWesternerscureddiseaseandimprovedguns.Infact,
AncientChinacanbecreditedwithsomeofthefirstAsearlyasthe10thcentury,theTangand
Songdynastiesdevelopedaninoculationtoprotectagainstthesmallpoxdisease.Chinese
physiciansdiscoveredthattheuseofaninjectionofaverysmallstrainofthediseasewouldact
asadefenseagainstsmallpox.TheEuropeansdidnotadaptthispracticeuntilthe1800swhich
evolvedintowhatisnowknownasthevaccination(HistoryofVaccinesTimeline).Among
theingeniousinventionsoftheChinesewereadvancedformsofwarfareandweaponry,a
countingsystem(abacus),thefirstmechanicalclock,papermoney,shipsails,ironmakingand

thespinningwheel.Ifanything,IwouldsaythatEasterncivilizationdoesnotget
enough
credit
forthedesignoftoolsthatareusedeveryday.Although,theWesthadmanygreathistorical
accomplishments,onemustnotforgettheoriginofthegiftsofourtechnology.
Teachingstudentsfromanearlyageaboutglobalissuesandtheimportanceofother
culturesisakeyfactorinreinforcingpositiveinteractionswithnationsinthefuture.Morethan
everwearetravelingtocountriessuchasSyriaandPalestineattemptingtoresolveissues
throughdiplomacy.ItisimperativeforthefuturediplomatsofAmericatounderstandthe
significanceofhowotherpeoplethinksowecanbetterunderstandhowtohelpandwork
alongsidethem.Scienceisalsobecomingmoregloballyconnected.Dataisbeingsharedacross
thecontinentsandtheinternetallowsustointeractwithalmostanyoneinaforeigncountry.The
sharingofresearchonaglobalspectrumenablesscientiststotackleissuessuchasclimate
change,whichbyitsnaturemustbeacollectiveprocess.Foreignservice,humanitarianworkand
diplomacyallrequireabasicunderstandingofothercountriesandflexibilitytoacceptsituations
vastlydifferentfromourown.
Mostimportantly,everyoneoneofusisaproductofothercultures.Thereisnopure
Americanculture.WecouldbedescendantsofsomeoftheverypeoplethatGillneycriticizesin
hisarticle.Humanhistoryhasalwaysbeenamethodofborrowingideasandadaptingthemtofit
ourowncivilizations.ChristianityisderivedfromIslamandJudaism.Ourtechnology,foodand
oilisimportedfromoverseas.OurnumbersareArabicandourlanguageisintheIndoEuropean
languagefamilyrightalongwithUrduandHindi(Short).Bylearningaboutothercultures,we
arelearningaboutourselves.
BeingastudentattheAcademyforGlobalStudiesentailstakingactioninthecommunity
andeventually,onaglobalscale.StudentshavetheopportunitytogotoCostaRicaandTurkey
andstaywithhostfamilies.Thisenablesthemtopracticethesecondlanguagetheyhavelearned
aswellascarryoutserviceworkforthelocals.Myhopeisthatonedaytherewillbemany
schoolsintheUSfortheadvancementofglobalcurriculum,givingstudentssimilar
opportunitiesasIhavebeenoffered.
