Refrigeration and Air Conditioning

Tutorial Sheet 1
Topics Covered: Reversed Carnot and Bell Coleman Cycle
1. The capacity of Refrigerator is 450 tons when working between -15oC and 30oC, Find
out the mass of ice produced within 24 hrs when water is supplied at 20oC. Also find out the
minimum power required. Assume the machine to be working on Carnot cycle. Take latent
heat of ice as 335 kJ/kg.
( Ans. mass = 361.2 tonnes, power required = 305.25 kW )
2. A cold storage plant is required to store 20 tonnes of fish. The temperature of the fish
when supplied= 25oC; storage temperature of the fish required= -8oC; specific heat of the
fish above the freezing point= 2.93 kJ/kgoC; specific heat of the fish below freezing
point= 1.25 kJ/kgoC; freezing point of the fish= -3oC; latent heat of the fish= 232 kJ/kg, If
the cooling is achieved within 8 hrs, find out:
1. Capacity of refrigeration plant
2. Carnot cycle C.O.P
3. If the actual C.O.P is 1/3rd of Carnot cycle, find out the power required to run
the plant.
(Ans. capacity = 57.19 tons, COP = 8.03)
3. An open air cycle operated by Air-Refrigeration system is required to produce 6 tonnes
of Refrigerating effect with a cooler pressure of 11 bar abs. and a refrigerated space or
region at a pressure of 1.05 bar. The temperature of air leaving the cooler is 38oC and the
air leaving the room is 16oC. Calculate:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Mass of air circulated per minute.

Compressor displacement required per minute.
Expander displacement required per minute.
C.O.P and
Power required per ton of R.E.

(Ans. m=10.57 kg, Comp. piston displacement = 8.35 m3/min, expander piston
displacement = 4.54 m3/min, COP = 1.02, P = 3.8 kW)
4. An air refrigeration system operating on Bell-Coleman cycle takes in air from cold
room at 6oC and compresses it from 1.04 bar to 6.2 bar. The index of compression is 1.4.
The compressed air is cooled to 25oC. The ambient air is at 18oC. Air expands in an
expander where index of expansion is 1.38. Determine:
1. C.O.P of the system
2. Quantity of air circulated per minute for production of 1500 kg of ice per day at
0oC from water at 18oC
3. Capacity of plant
Take cpw= 4.18 kJ/kgK(water); cpa=1.003 kJ/kgK(air) and latent heat of ice=335 kJ/kg
(Ans. COP = 1.837, mair = 5.02 kg/min, capacity = 1.83 Tons)
5. A Bell Coleman cycle works between 1 bar and 6 bar. Compression follows PV1.25
=C & expression follows PV1.3=C. find COP & capacity of unit in tons of refrigeration if
the air flow is 0.5 kg/sec. assume compression and expansion begins at 7oC & 37 oC
respectively. Assume Cp (air)= 1.05 kJkg K.
(Ans: COP= 4.734, Capacity=11.22 Ton)
