The common difference is the difference between consecutive terms. In an arithmetic sequence, any term can be written as a function of its position in the sequence. Examples of arithmetic sequences include counting by ones, twos, threes, etc. An arithmetic series is the sum of the terms in an arithmetic sequence, and there is a formula to calculate the sum of an arithmetic series from its first term, common difference and number of terms.
