6. The Past Continuous Tense

Were not = werent; was not = wasnt.

Didnt need to vs. neednt


We use didnt need to + infinitive without to to say that someone did not do
something because it was not necessary: She didnt need to play because the match was
cancelled.
We use neednt + perfect to say that someone did something although it was
unnecessary:
We neednt have brought any food to the party there was plenty already.
We use:
Used to + infinitive without to to talk about states or activities that happened regularly
in the past but they are no longer true: We used to go camping a lot. He used to be a
doctor.
Be used to + ing form of the verb or a noun to say that we are very familiar with
something: Were used to getting up early.
Get used to + -ing form of the verb or a noun to describe the process of getting
familiar with something:
We got used to eating rice when we lived in Asia.
How long did it take you to get used to the food here?
We use:
* see/ hear/ watch/ notice somebody do something when we want to say that we
observed the whole action (and we know how it ends):
I watched the children cross the street. (I saw the as they reached the other side.)
* see/ hear/ watch/ notice someday doing something when we want to say that we
observed the action in progress:
We watched the whales swimming off the coast of Patagonia.
