Sy Winnie began studying the piano at the age of five and quickly developed a strong foundation in

classical music appreciation and technique. However, jazz and rock music became Sys music of choice
and he quickly began performing regularly and professionally in these genres by the age of 16 at local
venues. His musical influences have included Herbie Hancock, Oscar Peterson, Art Tatum, Dr. John, and
Stevie Wonder.
To further his development in these styles, Sy studied jazz privately under his instructor Mark Kieswetter
(http://markkieswetter.com), and also continued his classical studies with Frances Renzi
(http://www.francesrenzi.net). In 1979 his guitar instructor A.J. Tscherne suggested that Sy take on
students of his own at his music retail store. His love of teaching has not stopped since then.
Outside of teaching music, Sy has played the keyboard, and guitar in many dierent bands.
