HISTORY
The Wicker Park District has been part of
Chicago since its incorporation as a city in 1837.
German and Norwegians were the first ethnic
groups pushing out of the city along the
immigrants path to prosperity, Milwaukee
Avenue. They were followed by the Jews and then
the Poles.
Industry first came to the area in 1857 when the
Rolling Mill Steel Works opened along the river
near Ashland and Armitage.

The major influx of residential and commercial

structures occurred in this part of the city as a
result of Chicagos Great Conflagration (Fire) in
1871. A vibrant community, the Wicker Park
District became home to many families that
would become vital to Chicagos growth and
prosperity.
Today, restaurants and entertainment co-mingle
with classy shops that offer everything from
couturier garments to contemporary and antique
home furnishings.

ATTRACTIONS
Wicker Park Farmers Market

Each Sunday, May to

October, farmers, vendors
and shoppers descend on
Wicker Park for the
neighborhood's farmers'
market, which features
fresh regional goods.
BFF Bikes

Owned by a pair of, yes,

BFFs, it offers Bianchi,
Giant and Public bikes,
as well as clothing for
commuters and casual
cyclists. Tune-ups and
repairs are also
available, as are group
riding sessions.

Holstein Park
This small Bucktown park
offers baseball fields,
basketball courts, a
playground, spray pool and
one of our favorite (sparsely
populated) swimming pools
in the city.

OUR THOUGHTS

Going around Wicker Park was a really fun

experience. Its a lot different than getting off at
Chicago and State and shopping at the
Magnificent Mile, going to the Willis Tower, or
Navy Pier. Traveling away from the busy
shopping center of Chicago, Wicker Park was a
great, rustic, and homey city. There were many
small restaurants and interesting shops along
the way. Its a perfect place to get away from the
city but still stay in Chicago.
