History

The unofficial designation of Boys Town as an area within Lake View dates back to 1970
when residents marched in the first annual Gay Pride Parade

The Boys town section of Lake view was

the first officially recognized gay
village in the United States
Horizons Community Services (now
known as The Center on Halsted)
Opened in 1973

The center is dedicated to advancing

community and securing the health
and well-being of the Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ)
people of Chicagoland

In 1997, the city of chicago proposed a

$3.2 million facelift for the area

A plan to commemorate Boys town

s Gay and lesbian residents
The city erected eleven pairs of 23-foothigh art-deco-style pillars with rainbow
rings in 1998.
Today, boys town is known for its trendy
shops, booming nightlife, and welcoming
community
